Apple's smart home plans could involve yet another partner, with security company ADT potentially joining the roster alongside LG and Schneider Electric.
Since early October, the rumor mill has been rife with claims that Apple will be using companies like LG and Schneider to help its smart home revival effort. However, job listings indicate that there could be a third company that will lend a hand to Apple.
Job listings for ADT have appeared across the United States since July, calling out for a "Low Voltage Technician," reports MacRumors. While some have been hired for the positions, it seems they haven't been given much information about their actual responsibilities.
Some successful applicants have disclosed since then that they have been shadowing other existing ADT technicians, as they waited for more information. Employees and managers have also signed non-disclosure agreements for the role, heightening the secrecy level as per usual for Apple.
A second clue is that these hires were provided with iPhones. Other ADT technicians work with Android devices, implying the selected workers have a need to use Apple's ecosystem.
Hires have also mentioned that ADT plans to hand out more information about the roles later in October. It is plausible that ADT is waiting for Apple's announcement to take place before doing so, meaning it could happen on October 13.
Service rather than devices
As for what ADT could provide to Apple customers, it seems that it won't be about ADT-produced hardware, and more assisting consumers with installations. Managers have told the new hires that it was to do with home automation and installation services.
At face value, this sounds like Apple providing an option for ADT to install new smart home devices for consumers. At least, the trickier devices that require some level of DIY skills to mount on a wall.
Candidates for these include LG's plethora of security cameras and a wall-mounted thermostat, as well as Apple's wall-mounted version of the HomeView. Schneider has also been linked to the effort, which brings in more thermostats to the picture.
While ADT does offer its own home security hardware and monitoring services, the rumor doesn't seem to indicate anything about new Apple-specific hardware.
It remains to be seen if ADT will be providing more than technician services for Apple.
