LG smart home accessories will benefit from Apple's ecosystem, getting iOS 27 notification and setup features that even Matter devices won't.

When you first set up a device such as AirPods, you bring it close to your iPhone and the two communicate. It's a spectacular example of Apple's integrated ecosystem, and now a similar thing is coming to accessories.

These are specifically the LG smart home accessories expected to be launched by Apple at its October 13, 2026 event. According to code sleuth pdfu, these accessories will respond when an iPhone is held near them.

Specifically, a feature called Proximity Control will detect a nearby iPhone and present controls on it. The controls are hints about what to do with a device, and they appear in the Dynamic Island.

These hints include one called "Open Controls," which launches the accessory controls. If the accessory is a camera or a doorbell, the iPhone can display a camera viewer instead.

If the user is on an iPhone without a Dynamic Island, or they're using an iPad, then the same thing is done as a notification instead. Rather than a hint that may stay in the Dynamic Island, the notification will pop up for 30 seconds.

Pairing and setup

This is all also similar to how Handoff works, where you can have music playing on your iPhone switch to your HomePod. And according to pdfu, something similar is being done with the new home accessories, in that this is how you start setting up.

Specifically, it's called a "tap to set up without power" feature. Holding your iPhone next to the accessory, or tapping the two devices together, sets up pairing.

So the iPhone's network credentials are given to the accessory where they are stored in an NFC secure element. It means that the accessory gets to go on your Wi-Fi network immediately, without having to tap out the details yourself.

It appears, though, that is only going to happen with devices that directly support HomeKit. So even though the cross-manufacturer home standard Matter is actually based on HomeKit, this particular feature won't automatically work with every type of device.

Although separately, Matter has gained an easier setup process.
