Employees relying on third-party AI use to perform work at Apple will need to cut back as funding has been reduced by as much as a third for some.

Internal artificial intelligence use has become too expensive for many companies, including Apple, as returns for the expenses continue to wane. Apple uses the features for coding assistance, bug hunting, and more, but reliance on these expensive tools is proving costly.

According to a report from Bloomberg, Apple has already cut available funds from $300 to $200 per engineer. Some cuts have even seen cuts down to $100, and yet some still have as little as $25 in AI funding for their projects.

Apple allegedly allows employees to request higher allowances on a per-use basis. The move appears to reflect a pulling back the rest of the tech industry has seen as the experimental phase of AI ends.

No signs of doom

The report seems to suggest there is confusion for the move while hanging the threat of potential layoffs over the whole thing. However, it also says that many engineers reported Apple employees not coming close to the already generous $300 limit.

While some might suspect this cost-cutting is some kind of threat, it is more likely a bureaucratic one. If employees aren't spending what is allotted, then freeing up those funds for other projects makes more sense.

The reality of artificial intelligence has been slow to set in on the wider investors and "lunatic fringe." It is a capable technology that can accelerate workflows and find bugs at a scale no human could, but it is also limited in its usefulness among experts in their craft.

Developers aren't vibe coding the next update to Pages or Notes.

Apple is also working to develop more functional AI systems that run on its own Apple Foundation Models. There's also the fact that Apple's Mac lineup are incredibly capable of running some models locally, thus minimizing the need for additional paid tokens.

As the AI boom turns more into an AI trickle and the investment bubble pops, budgeting around the new reality of the technology is only logical.
