You don't have to buy a wall-mount for the wall-mounted Apple HomeView, but until third-party manufacturers make some, you'll probably want to as there are no VESA screw-holes at all.
On Tuesday, Apple announced its newest push into the smart home market: the Apple HomeView. It's a smart home hub that starts at $299 and is designed to function as a one-stop shop for home automation and device management.
You can buy a standalone HomeView, which pairs the device with a stand that functions as a speaker. You can also purchase the Apple HomeView without the stand and mount it on your wall.
Apple offers a few different options for the wall-mounted version. You can get a self-install Power Mount that allows you to plug your HomeView into a nearby outlet for an additional $59.95.
If you'd prefer to avoid cords altogether, there's a $79.95 option you can purchase that hardwires into your home's electrical system. While Apple doesn't explicitly say that you'll need to have a professional install it, it does suggest that buyers seek the services of a licensed electrician.
Both wall mount options have been done in partnership with Schneider Home.
Of course, you can also forego the mount entirely and just purchase the wall-mounted HomeView. Apple suggests that you buy a wall mount, though. Or maybe one of those little wood desk artwork wood tri-pods.
Apple has not chosen to make the device VESA compatible. It appears that the device has a USB-C port and a small bump that would be compatible with a specific kind of mounting point.
Odds are, the option is being made available so third-party companies can make their own wall mounts available, which would allow customers more options. However, until those mounts hit the market, customers may want to opt for one of the existing options.
Apple also plans to release a hardwired Power over Ethernet (PoE) mount for $129.95 sometime in the future. This would also give the HomeView a direct internet connection.
