Apple will give its upcoming Everest drama "Tenzing" its first theatrical release of the year before bringing the film to Apple TV, continuing its strategy of debuting select prestige films on the big screen.
"Tenzing" opens in select theaters on October 9 before making its debut on Apple TV on October 16. Apple announced the release dates alongside the film's first details, cast, and creative team.
Genden Phuntsok stars as Tenzing Norgay, while Tom Hiddleston plays New Zealand climber Edmund Hillary. Based on true events, the film tells the story of the first successful ascent of Mount Everest through Norgay's perspective.
The story follows Norgay's rise from a little-known Himalayan climber to one of the most recognized figures in mountaineering history. It also explores the encouragement he received from his wife, Dawa, and the partnership that helped Norgay and Hillary reach the summit.
Willem Dafoe and Caitriona Balfe also star in the film, while Jennifer Peedom directs from a story she developed with writer and producer Luke Davies. Liz Watts and Emile Sherman produced the film.
Why Apple is giving "Tenzing" a theatrical release
Apple has increasingly given select films a theatrical release before bringing them to Apple TV, particularly projects aimed at awards audiences. A limited theatrical run can build awareness, generate reviews, and qualify a film for major awards before it begins streaming.
The drama also lends itself to a theatrical release because of its expansive Everest setting. "Tenzing" arrives on Apple TV one week after its theatrical debut.
"Tenzing" carries a TV-PG rating and is categorized as a drama and adventure film. Apple hasn't announced additional release territories or theater counts beyond confirming the premiere dates.
