Apple launched the powerful new M6 processor in a fresh version of the Mac mini on Tuesday. It’s a significant boost over its predecessor, and is expected to soon become part of a range of products — MacBooks, iMacs and more.
But the M7 could already be closer than you realize.
Apple silicon keeps pushing the boundaries
Apple’s modern silicon story began in 2020 when the company introduced the M1, its first Mac chip designed in-house to replace Intel processors. Built on the same Arm-based architecture that powers Apple’s iPhone and iPad chips, M1 delivered a major leap in performance and power efficiency.
Increasingly powerful chips followed, and with each generation, Apple has pushed further into graphics and AI performance, as well as sheer CPU power.
The M6 that just launched is the base model in a new series, and it brings a substantial boost.
M6 performance is more than twice as fast as your M1
Part of the secret of the M6’s performance improvements is its new 2-nanometer design, versus Apple’s previous 3nm chips. By squeezing in more transistors and packing them more tightly, the chip can be faster while using less power.
But that’s not all. The M6 includes an expanded 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU — two more CPU and GPU cores than M5.
Apple says the new chip offers up to 1.2x faster multithreaded performance than the M5 and up to 2.4x the performance of M1, while its GPU delivers nearly 30% more peak AI compute than M5.
The M6 also doubles down on on-device AI with a Dual 16-core Neural Engine capable of up to twice the peak compute of previous generations, while faster memory bandwidth helps keep demanding workloads moving.
“Built using the cutting-edge 2 nm process, M6 combines a new CPU complex, two additional CPU and GPU cores, a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, and more unified memory bandwidth to power through workloads with amazing energy efficiency,” said Sri Santhanam, Apple’s vice president of Silicon Engineering Group, in a statement.

The M6 debuted in the revamped Mac mini on Tuesday, but that won’t be the only option for long. Given all the rumors, it’s a safe bet that it will go into a range of models in the coming months:
14-inch MacBook Pro — this new base model notebook for professionals is expected with an M6 in fall 2026.
24-inch iMac — also expected in fall 2026, with the M6 replacing the current M4 chip.
13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air — expected in early 2027 with the M6 in place of the current M5.
Plus, it’s possible the next-gen iPad Pro tablet will use an M6 when it launches in spring 2027.
… but not for long?
With the M6 only launching today, it might seem odd to already be talking about the M7, but Apple could keep its newest chip around for an unusually short amount of time. Rumors point to an M7 launch in the first half of 2027, much less than a year after the M6 debut.
Apparently, the M7 will be ready to go early, and Apple doesn’t want to wait. The next-gen processor is rumored to be even better at on-device AI than the new version.
The turnaround is supposedly so quick that Apple will never make M6 Pro and M6 Max variants. The touchscreen MacBook coming this fall will allegedly be built around the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, and the MacBook Pro models coming in fall 2027 will use M7 Pro and M7 Max.
