Apple's first touchscreen MacBook Pro reportedly carries a $400 premium, with a starting price of $2,899.

Apple is expected to introduce 14-inch and 16-inch touchscreen MacBook Pro models on Wednesday as premium additions to the lineup. The existing non-touchscreen models will remain available alongside them.

According to Bloomberg's sources, Apple mulled over a $2,899 starting price for the 14-inch model with an M5 Pro chip. That would make it $400 more expensive than the current 14-inch M5 Pro MacBook Pro.

The current 16-inch MacBook Pro starts at $2,999 without a touchscreen. A matching $400 increase would situate the new model at $3,399.

At $2,899, the 14-inch model would have the highest starting price of any new MacBook Pro. That comes in at $700 more than the 14-inch and 16-inch M5 Pro MacBook Pro models before Apple's mid-year price hikes.

The new touchscreen MacBooks will feature OLED XDR displays and a Dynamic Island, while retaining the current lineup's general appearance. They'll also have thinner display borders, slightly slimmer bodies, and weigh less.

Apple has also redesigned the hinge to keep the screen steady during touch input. The cooling system has been redesigned, reducing weight and improving airflow through the hinge.

The company has updated macOS Golden Gate to support touch, including dial-like menus that appear around a user's finger. The keyboard and trackpad will remain the primary input methods.

Apple plans to begin taking preorders on Wednesday, with sales potentially starting on November 6. That would match the release date for the updated iPad mini, M6 MacBook Pro, and M6 iMac announced earlier this week.

The first touchscreen MacBook Pros will likely feature the M5 Pro and M5 Max processors, skipping the M6 chip. Bloomberg says that Apple is also developing M7 Pro and M7 Max versions for the fall of 2027.
