Australia's Prime Minister says Tim Cook backs the country's social media curbs

Former Apple CEO Tim Cook reportedly regards Australia's efforts to reduce the negative effects of social media as being "world-leading."

Australia has been implementing policies such as age verification in an attempt to limit children and teenagers' use of social media. Now Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been visiting Apple Park, and according to Reuters, says that Tim Cook backed the moves.

"Tim Cook gave us a lot of time this morning," Albanese said. "He regards the work that we've done on social media to be world-leading."

Australian television has described the meeting as a lightning-fast, one-hour, closed-door session.

"It was a proud moment today, I've got to say, when the head of a major company that has changed the world, Tim Cook from Apple recognizes the leadership that Australia has shown," Prime Minister Albanese later said on Australian television.

Following his talk with Cook, the Prime Minister was also shown Apple's latest parental control features. "That's an example of the private sector following government's lead," he said.

Tim Cook has not commented on the details of his meeting, but did share on social media that it was happening.

The meeting with Prime Minister Albanese was one of Tim Cook's first duties on transitioning from CEO to Apple's Executive Chairman.
