When I first reviewed Halo Collar 5 in fall 2025, I called it “simply the best GPS dog tracker.” Imagine my surprise that it got better. Since the product launch, Halo added Precision+, which makes tracking your pet even more exact.
It’s also a real benefit with Holo’s virtual fence feature.
I tested Halo Collar 5 with Precision+ added, and came away even more impressed.
Halo Collar 5 with Precision+ review
A GPS dog collar can give you peace of mind because it takes the guesswork out of keeping track of your beloved pet’s location. If James Earl Bones escapes the house, gets lost or just wanders too far, GPS tracking shows his location on your iPhone so you can head straight to him.
Halo Collar 5 with Precision+ makes that even easier.
And there’s good news for those who already have this tracking collar on their dog: the GPS upgrade was automatic. Jabba the Mutt has it now.

Just right for medium to large dogs

The Halo Collar 5 packs GPS, Wi-Fi, cellular connectivity, a speaker and a sizable battery into a relatively large but flexible unit designed for dogs.
It fits necks from about 8 to 30.5 inches, although dogs with necks smaller than roughly 18 inches may not be a good fit. Given the size of the hardware, the collar is unsuitable for cats and small dogs.
Adjustable rubber straps and a clasp make it easy to put on and remove, while the rechargeable battery needs topping up several times a week. The collar comes in black, blue, pink, yellow and orange and has an IP67 water-resistance rating, so it can handle a swim of up to 30 minutes.
I go into much more detail in my full review of the Halo Collar 5. This follow-up review focuses on the improved GPS feature.
Precision+ performance

Halo Collar 5 comes with a GPS built in so you can track it, and your dog, in real time. When I first tested it last fall, I was satisfied with the performance. But Halo wasn’t. And maybe some customers wanted more — this is a premium product and “good enough” might not do it.
As I said in my original review, the collar at that time could tell me that Woofie Goldberg was in the corner of the yard, but wasn’t as accurate as my iPhone location.
That changed with Precision+. My Halo Collar 5 now knows exactly where it is. When I’m walking the dog, I can tell if we’re on the left, right or middle of the road, for example.
The collar comes with dual-band GPS hardware, and to upgrade that to Precision+, Halo added support for Swift Navigation’s Skylark Precise Positioning Service. This is a cloud-based GPS correction service powered by a global network of ground reference stations.
What that means in real-world terms is that if you’re looking for Wagatha Christie, the Halo application on your iPhone can show exactly where she is. Not just in your neighbor’s side yard, but between the hydrangea bushes. And that should give you some peace of mind.
Better GPS dog fence
The Halo Collar 5 is absolutely not a shock collar, but you can use it and the app to set up virtual fences around your home, and the collar will then warn Mutt Damon not to cross them.
Halo Collar 5 vibrates, beeps and whistles to alert your pet that they are approaching a no-go area. You need to train your dog to honor these signals and stop, though.
Thanks to Precision+, the app can more accurately determine the location of the collar, so it’s going to do a better job as a virtual fence. Indiana Bones won’t get a warning if he’s not actually nearing the edge of your yard.
Halo Collar 5 with Precision+ review: Final thoughts

If you have a medium to large dog, you won’t find a better GPS collar than this one. And Precision+ makes it even better.
If the new feature got you interested, I highly recommend you read my full review, which goes into much more depth about all the features of this product, including its battery life.
If you have a cat or a small dog, I suggest putting an AirTag 2 on its collar. I have one for my cat.
