Google upgraded the Gemini app for macOS to take on Wispr Flow and other AI-powered dictation apps. The update introduces the Intelligent dictation feature, which transcribes your spoken words into text in real time.

It also adds support for screen-aware reasoning, allowing Gemini to understand what’s on your screen.

Gemini for Mac gets two features you’ll actually use

After teasing a dedicated Gemini app for macOS was in development, Google released the standalone app in April this year. Since then, it has rolled out several updates, adding new features and capabilities.

The latest round of improvements to Gemini’s macOS app are arguably the biggest yet. Intelligent dictation brings AI-powered transcription to the Gemini app. It’s even smart enough to remove all pauses and filler words from your speech. By default, the feature is mapped to a long-press of the Fn key.

This will put Gemini in direct competition with Wispr Flow, Spokenly and other AI-powered dictation apps. They all offer similar functionality, so it will be interesting to see how Google eventually differentiates its offering.

Gemini for Mac is finally catching up to ChatGPT and Claude

You can share your Mac’s screen with ChatGPT or Claude to get help with your work or ask it to execute tasks on your behalf. Google is adding a similar feature to Gemini’s macOS app. With screen-aware reasoning, you can “highlight a document and say, “Turn these notes into an executive summary,” and Gemini will drop the rewritten text exactly where they need it.”

While Intelligent dictation is enabled by default, the screen-aware reasoning feature is opt-in.

For now, the new dictation feature in the Gemini app will only work in English. It is rolling out to all Gemini Mac app users worldwide. Support for more languages will come later this year.
