The upgrades to Find My in iOS 27 are more than just graphical. Now there's more granular control over location sharing, and you can even pause sharing temporarily.
Like a lot of other apps in iOS 27, the updates to Find My are not really groundbreaking in nature. But they are still useful.
The obvious changes this time are a refinement of the design. The Liquid Glass aesthetic wasn't around for iOS 26, but it's certainly here in iOS 27.
That includes more translucency that matches other apps in the operating system, as well as different font sizes and a circular Plus icon in the top-right of the tray.
A more subtle change is the tab icons. Now, you have two busts for People, an AirTag for Items, and a map pin for Me.
However, one really handy change is being able to use it in landscape mode. Simply rotate your iPhone, and the interface switches so you can see a wider view of the Map, while the items are in a column to the left.
This is so much better to use when checking the locations of items and people in the map.
Granular sharing
The functional changes in Find My revolve around sharing locations. Or in some cases, not sharing.
For a start, when you go to share your location with someone else, you're given four timing options. They are For One Hour, For Today, Always, and Custom.
Custom lets you go beyond the three timing options, down to the minute. Using three dials, you can roll to decide a timeframe lasting between 15 minutes and 30 days.
If you have a specific date and time in mind for the sharing to cease, you can also set it up from the same screen. This means you can set the sharing up without needing to work out how long it needs to be to reach a certain time.
After tapping Start Sharing, you're given a notification of when the sharing period ends.
Connected to the customized sharing periods is a new option that appears when you're sharing. After selecting a contact you've shared your location with, there's a new "Hide Location" link under My Location.
If you immediately select it, your location is immediately hidden from the person you have shared it with. On the sharer's device, their Find My instead shows "No location found" and a reloading icon.
This may sound a little counterintuitive, as you could completely stop sharing your location at any time. The difference is that this is only a temporary change that doesn't turn off all of your sharing settings with that contact.
This could be handy in a few ways, such as not giving the game away when setting up a surprise for a loved one. It kinda ruins the effect if your relative knows you went into a specific store just ahead of their birthday, for example.
It's a feature that sounds like a bit of a waste of time for Apple to develop. But, since it loses your location in a graceful way that doesn't disrupt or force you to reestablish sharing afterward, it makes sense.
It's probably an addition that you will discount as pointless, until you have a reason to use it. After that, you'll sing its praises.
Importantly, though, none of this changes how device location works in a Family share. In that case, you're still locateable, assuming the person on the family share looking for you knows what device you have on your person.
