Top billing in today’s WWDC 2026 keynote will be Apple’s reveal of exactly what we can expect in terms of new Siri features in iOS 27. We know what we should be expecting, but there may be important small-print about limitations and timings.
Clearly things have not gone well to date, but will this be the day when Apple announces a clear turnaround for the checkered history of its revitalized intelligent assistant … ?
Apple infamously advertised new Siri features way back in 2024 before having to admit that they weren’t ready and delete the video in which they were shown. That was not well received, and almost halfway through 2026 we’re still waiting to find out exactly what the new Siri will offer at launch. Today is when we will finally find out .
There are reasons for optimism. The new Siri will be powered by Google’s Gemini models, and a recent test showed that this is more-or-less delivering on the promises the company made in its own keynote presentation. If it works for Google products on Android phones, then we might reasonably expect the same level of performance for Apple products and services on iPhone.
However, given the checkered history, it’s not at all surprising to see skepticism. We learned yesterday that iPhone users may have to join a waitlist in order to get access to the new features, and that report certainly isn’t helping matters. Many 9to5Mac readers are decidedly unimpressed.
“How pathetic is that? We’ve been waiting for a Siri that actually works — it never worked properly — and now we have to be on a waiting list for mainstream features that should’ve been there already.”
“If apple don’t launch a full service in September then they’re just a laughing stock.”
“After delaying the launch of Siri for over two years, they are now going to restrict the launch. What exactly have they been doing in the over 12 months since they first announced the partnership with Google?”
“So, a feature that was supposed to arrive 2 years ago, will now have a wait list, a nice way to delay it again without saying it is delayed.”
