Political campaign texts are relentless ahead of Election Day, with fundraising appeals piling up in Messages. One iPhone setting can silence their alerts without forcing you to block each unfamiliar number.
Blocking a number doesn't help much when the next fundraising appeal arrives from a different one. Political fundraising groups even raised objections when Apple expanded message filtering in iOS 26, concerned that donation requests would go unnoticed.
Apple's Screen Unknown Senders feature separates messages based on whether you've established contact with the sender, not whether a message looks like spam. It moves texts from unfamiliar numbers into a separate folder and generally silences their notifications without preventing delivery.
The feature was off by default in iOS 26 unless you'd previously enabled the older Filter Unknown Senders setting. That means even an updated iPhone might still be letting every campaign appeal into your main conversation list.
How to silence political campaign texts on iPhone
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap Apps, then select Messages.
- Scroll down to Unknown Senders.
- Enable Screen Unknown Senders to separate messages from unfamiliar numbers.
- Tap Allow Notifications to review which categories can still trigger alerts.
Alternatively, open the Messages app, tap Filters, select Manage Filtering, and enable Screen Unknown Senders.
The notification exceptions are worth checking before leaving Settings. You can disable categories you don't need while keeping Time Sensitive enabled for verification codes and other important alerts.
Available categories vary by region, and Messages doesn't specifically identify political campaign texts.Available categories vary by region, and Messages doesn't specifically identify political campaign texts. Because the feature screens unfamiliar senders rather than political content, it can catch fundraising appeals regardless of how they're worded.
You can review filtered conversations anytime by opening Messages, tapping Filters, and selecting Unknown Senders. If you recognize someone and want their messages back in your main conversation list, open the conversation and tap Mark as Known.
What the filter won't stop
Screen Unknown Senders is useful for anyone who wants fewer interruptions without permanently blocking unfamiliar numbers. However, screening messages based on their sender comes with a trade-off.
Legitimate texts from unfamiliar numbers can end up in the same folder as campaign appeals, including appointment reminders and delivery updates. It's worth checking Unknown Senders occasionally, especially when you're expecting an important message.
The filter also won't necessarily silence campaigns you've already interacted with. Messages from saved contacts or senders you've replied to at least three times may still appear normally, requiring you to block those numbers individually if you want to stop receiving their messages.
For legitimate campaign messages, replying STOP may remove your number from that particular texting list, although it won't unsubscribe you from unrelated campaigns.
Avoid replying to suspicious messages from unfamiliar numbers. The Messages app also provides spam reporting tools for unwanted texts, along with options for blocking individual senders.
