Apple's OS 27 releases push Continuity beyond handoffs by carrying Siri conversations and live Mac content across supported devices. Here's where to find the new features and how to use them across your Apple devices.
Siri AI can synchronize conversation history across supported personal devices. Spatial Preview lets Mac apps send live documents and 3D content to Apple Vision Pro.
Both features preserve more of what the user was doing as the screen, controls and hardware change. Continuity is no longer limited to handing off a webpage, call or clipboard item.
Apple now uses Continuity to decide which trusted device can provide an activity, display, camera, connection, credential or piece of personal context. An Apple Account establishes ownership, while proximity and authentication determine which products can take part.
Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, iCloud and carrier services move the necessary information. The result can feel like one computing environment, although every feature follows a different mix of account, hardware, regional, network and security rules.
Siri turns Continuity into a shared history
Handoff has traditionally moved a current activity from one device to another. A supported app tells a nearby device which webpage, draft, document, route or call the user wants to continue, and the receiving app rebuilds that state.
Siri AI introduces a more persistent form of Continuity. Apple says the dedicated Siri app privately synchronizes conversation history through iCloud across supported iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Vision Pro devices.
A user can begin a request on an iPhone and pick up the conversation later on a Mac without repeating the earlier exchange. The same history can follow the user across products with different interfaces, controls and processing capabilities.
Siri can also draw from messages, mail, notes, photos, on-screen content and supported apps while answering a request.
The history gives Siri access to the earlier exchange, not just a pointer to a webpage or document. Siri can use that context to understand what the user asks next.
Siri AI also requires supported hardware capable of running Apple Intelligence. A device may install an OS 27 release and continue using AirDrop, Handoff or Universal Clipboard without qualifying for shared Siri history.
Siri AI won't initially be available on iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch in the European Union, although eligible Macs and Vision Pro devices can receive the feature there when users select a supported language.
The EU delay means one Apple Account can connect several current devices without giving every product the same Siri capabilities. Apple Intelligence also remains unavailable under certain device-purchase, location and account conditions in mainland China, as Apple explains in its availability guidance.
Apple plans to release Siri AI as an English-language beta later in 2026.
Spatial Preview gives Mac apps a Vision Pro endpoint
Spatial Preview deepens the connection between macOS 27 and visionOS 27. The feature lets a Mac app send a document, spatial image, PDF or USD-based 3D asset to Quick Look on a nearby Vision Pro.
Apple Vision Pro doesn't have to display the content inside a flat Mac window. visionOS can render supported material through its own spatial interface while the Mac remains the authoring computer.
The preview can update as the user edits the source on the Mac. A designer could change a material or color in a Mac app, then inspect the revised object in three dimensions on Vision Pro.
A Mac app can send the preview through an active Mac Virtual Display connection. Developers can also present a picker containing nearby Vision Pro units signed in to the same iCloud account.
Apple doesn't require a complete companion visionOS app just to provide the preview. The Mac app can control the workflow while Vision Pro handles the spatial presentation.
Spatial Preview works differently from screen mirroring. AirPlay sends a media stream or mirrored display, while Mac Virtual Display places the macOS workspace inside Vision Pro.
Spatial Preview instead sends structured content that visionOS can render through the headset's own interface. Vision Pro can inspect or present work created on the Mac without acting only as a private monitor.
The spatial-computing changes in visionOS 27 show how much Vision Pro depends on its connections with the Mac and iPhone. The headset becomes more useful when it extends existing workflows instead of waiting for developers to rebuild every tool as a native spatial app.
Mac Virtual Display already provides one connection between the two platforms. Apple's support guide says compatible Apple silicon Macs can provide Standard, Wide and Ultrawide virtual displays under the required macOS and visionOS versions.
visionOS 27 also adds a widget designed to make Mac Virtual Display easier to start, including when a Mac notebook is closed. Apple hasn't published a complete support matrix for power, sleep, FileVault and login states, so closed-Mac behavior still needs direct testing.
Spatial Preview lets the Mac create and manage content while Vision Pro presents the result in a form suited to spatial hardware. Developer adoption will determine whether the feature becomes a routine workflow or remains limited to a small group of Mac apps.
Continuity is a policy layer, not one protocol
No single wireless technology explains every Continuity feature. Apple combines several mechanisms according to the amount of data moving, the distance between devices and the access being granted.
Bluetooth Low Energy often handles discovery between nearby devices. A faster local connection carries larger payloads, with AirDrop using direct peer-to-peer Wi-Fi and Apple's Handoff security documentation describing Bluetooth discovery followed by an encrypted Wi-Fi connection when more data is needed.
Sidecar, Universal Control, AirPlay, Continuity Camera and Mac Virtual Display also rely on nearby or local communication. Apple doesn't publish one transport specification covering every feature, so the same network condition can affect each connection differently.
A VPN may disrupt local discovery or routing while leaving a direct AirDrop exchange functional. Guest networks, client isolation, separate VLANs, captive portals, Personal Hotspot and Internet Sharing can create other feature-specific failures.
iCloud provides persistence when proximity is unnecessary. Messages, documents, passwords and supported app state can remain available after the original device is offline or far away.
iCloud Keychain uses a protected trusted-device system to synchronize passwords and passkeys. Apple's Keychain guide describes end-to-end-encrypted synchronization and recovery protections that differ from a nearby Handoff exchange.
Carrier relay lets an iPhone bridge calls or messages to the telephone network while another Apple device provides the interface. Cryptographic trust governs features that expose more control, including iPhone Mirroring and Apple Watch unlock.
Ultra Wideband improves precise ranging and spatial awareness for supported products, including parts of Find My and enhanced proximity interactions. Many cross-device features work without UWB.
Private Cloud Compute belongs to the intelligence layer rather than the nearby-device transport. PCC can process some Siri requests, while iCloud and local trust systems handle other parts of the experience.
A common policy layer ties Continuity's transport, cloud and trust systems together. The Apple Account identifies the user, proximity narrows the device choices, authentication authorizes the action and an available transport moves the information.
iPhone Mirroring shows how complicated one connection can become
iPhone Mirroring began as a way to display and control a locked iPhone from a nearby Mac. The feature now shows how several cross-device relationships can sit behind one product name.
Apple's current documentation says the Mac can resize the Mirroring window, switch automatically for landscape content and drag files between macOS and compatible iPhone apps. Apple documents those capabilities as current behavior, not only as beta observations.
Interactive mirroring still comes with strict requirements. The iPhone must be powered on, locked and near a compatible Mac, while both devices must use the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication.
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Handoff also need to be enabled. The Mac can't use Internet Sharing, AirPlay or Sidecar during the session, and Apple still says iPhone Mirroring is unavailable in the European Union.
The initial setup establishes a trusted relationship instead of granting access to any nearby Mac. Apple describes a cryptographic process tied to the current identities of the iPhone and Mac, with sensitive key material protected by each device's security hardware.
The Mac can then authenticate the user and unlock the iPhone data required for the remote session while the handset remains locked. Apple's security guide says iPhone Mirroring uses the same remote-unlock foundation as other trusted-device features, although it doesn't require secure ranging.
Users can require authentication for every connection or let an approved Mac connect more automatically. The selected policy makes the Mac part of the iPhone's practical security boundary, so users should review the relationship before sharing, selling or servicing a Mac.
Notifications create a second connection between the iPhone and Mac. Selected notifications and Live Activities can keep appearing on the approved Mac after the iPhone moves out of Mirroring range, as long as the phone stays on.
Notification forwarding is pinned to the Mac's cryptographic identity and protected in transit. Users can disable individual apps or remove the Mac from the iPhone's approved list.
iPhone widgets show app information or controls on a Mac without opening the full remote interface. Handoff opens matching app state in macOS, while AirPlay mirrors the display without iPhone Mirroring's trusted control link.
The Mirroring guide explains the original pairing and control model. macOS 27 makes the window more flexible, but the update doesn't simplify the policies surrounding the connection.
Handoff and iCloud solve different continuity problems
Apple's original Continuity model remains important because newer context features build on ideas the company has used for more than a decade. Handoff handles the immediate transfer of an activity between nearby personal devices.
A supported app advertises what the user is doing, and another device on the same Apple Account can open the corresponding app at the relevant item. Apple's Handoff guide requires compatible software, the same account and the proper Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Handoff settings.
The activity isn't the same as the underlying data, which may live in iCloud Drive or on a third-party server. Handoff gives the destination app enough information to find and reopen the file.
Handoff therefore can't migrate every live session. The app must support the activity, the content must remain accessible and the receiving device must know how to rebuild the state.
iCloud synchronization solves a different problem. Messages, passwords, documents and supported app data can remain available after devices separate because the information belongs to the account rather than one nearby session.
A Safari page offered through Handoff and a Reading List entry synchronized through iCloud can look similar. Handoff advertises a nearby activity, while Reading List stores account data for later access.
Siri conversation history sits closer to the iCloud model because Apple says the history synchronizes through the account. The user still experiences the feature like Handoff because the conversation continues on another device.
Apple's formal Continuity list no longer captures the complete experience. Users see one promise to continue working, while Apple fulfills that promise through systems with different time scales and requirements.
AirDrop and Universal Clipboard move data on different terms
AirDrop is an explicit nearby transfer that can cross Apple Account boundaries. The sender chooses a person or device, the receiver decides whether to accept the item and the products establish a direct local connection.
Apple's security documentation says AirDrop uses Bluetooth Low Energy for discovery and peer-to-peer Wi-Fi for the transfer. AirDrop doesn't need an internet connection or a conventional wireless access point, and TLS protects the direct connection.
Contacts Only attempts to identify the sender through information stored in Contacts. A missing Apple Account email address or phone number can block discovery even when both people believe their contact cards are complete.
Everyone for 10 Minutes temporarily broadens discoverability before returning to a more restrictive state. Supported newer software also lets noncontacts use an AirDrop code without leaving the receiver continuously visible.
Apple says iOS 27 can make AirDrop transfers up to 80% faster in its best test conditions, though users may not see the same improvement across every pair of devices. Performance depends on radio hardware, distance, interference, file mix, thermal conditions and software builds.
Universal Clipboard is an implicit and temporary same-user transfer. A copied item becomes available for a short period on another nearby device using the same Apple Account and Continuity settings.
The feature avoids a share sheet and explicit destination while making sensitive clipboard material available on more trusted devices. A copied password, authentication code, private message or image can become available to apps under the clipboard protections of the receiving platform.
Apple protects the path between devices, but Universal Clipboard doesn't make every app equally trustworthy. iCloud Drive provides a persistent alternative by saving an account-synchronized copy that remains available after the source device is gone.
Continuity lets one device lend hardware to another
Continuity Camera is Apple's clearest example of one product supplying hardware that another lacks. A compatible iPhone can become a Mac webcam or microphone without requiring the Mac to contain the same mobile camera system.
Apple's camera guide says compatible iPhones and Macs can connect wirelessly or through USB under the required account and software conditions. Supported hardware can provide Center Stage, Portrait mode, Studio Light and Desk View.
Desk View uses the iPhone camera's wide field of view to create an overhead-style image, so placement and camera hardware affect the result.
Continuity Camera also lets an iPhone or iPad capture a photo or scan directly into a supported Mac app. Continuity Sketch and Markup can return drawings or annotations to a Mac document.
Apple TV extends the same idea across three devices. An iPhone or iPad supplies the camera and microphone, Apple TV runs FaceTime or another compatible app, and the television provides the largest display.
Sidecar and Universal Control connect the same products for opposite goals. Sidecar turns an iPad into part of the Mac's display system, while Universal Control keeps macOS and iPadOS independent as one keyboard and pointer move between them.
Apple's Control guide says compatible devices must use the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication. The devices ordinarily must remain within about 10 meters, and Hotspot, Internet Sharing or network conditions can interfere.
AirPlay to Mac turns the Mac into a receiver for streamed media or screen mirroring. Mac Virtual Display reverses the display relationship by turning Vision Pro into a private Mac workspace, while Spatial Preview moves selected content outside that rectangular workspace and into the native visionOS environment.
The iPhone remains the carrier gateway
Apple has put phone and messaging interfaces on several products, but the iPhone often remains connected to the carrier. A Mac, iPad or Vision Pro can become an interface for the line without becoming the independent cellular endpoint.
iPhone Cellular Calls relays calls to compatible nearby devices through the iPhone. Carrier-supported Wi-Fi Calling on iCloud-connected devices can allow some calls when the iPhone isn't nearby, depending on the carrier, country and account configuration.
Both paths can look almost identical from a Mac or iPad. The difference becomes obvious when the iPhone leaves the network, loses power or can't reach the carrier.
macOS includes a dedicated Phone app, which makes the Mac appear more independent. The iPhone or carrier service may still provide the underlying connection.
SMS, MMS and RCS forwarding follow the same principle. Apple's forwarding guide says the iPhone can make those messages available on a Mac, iPad or Vision Pro signed in to the proper Apple Account.
The iPhone remains involved in carrier delivery, while Messages in iCloud separately synchronizes conversation history. The visible thread and the transport for a new message can therefore follow different paths.
RCS adds another dependency because carriers and regions determine availability and supported behavior. Apple's RCS guide makes the limitation explicit.
FaceTime uses Apple's own identity and communications infrastructure instead of the iPhone's SMS or cellular-call relay. FaceTime Handoff can move an active call among compatible nearby devices, while AirPods may separately switch the audio endpoint.
One conversation can therefore involve several independent transitions with separate failure conditions. Continuity works best when carrier, FaceTime and audio-routing systems coordinate without exposing their boundaries.
Apple Watch and AirPods follow the person
Apple Watch contributes less screen area than Apple's other personal devices, but its position on the wrist makes it useful for identity and proximity. A passcode-protected Watch that is unlocked and being worn can help unlock a nearby Mac or approve supported requests.
Apple's unlock guide still requires the Mac password after a restart, logout or some security changes. Apple Watch provides an additional trusted-device signal rather than replacing normal Mac authentication.
watchOS 27 narrows the hardware that can receive the newest operating-system features, even though Auto Unlock works on older models running earlier software. The watchOS 27 changes include newer AI, wellness and coaching features.
An older Watch may continue unlocking a Mac without receiving the complete Siri or Find My experience in watchOS 27. Historical support for one Continuity feature doesn't guarantee access to every current one.
AirPods follow the user instead of staying tied to one computer. Supported models can switch their Bluetooth connection when another device on the same Apple Account starts relevant playback or takes a call.
Apple's switching guide lets users limit or disable the behavior when the automatic choice becomes intrusive. Automatic switching routes audio rather than moving the source app, and manual routing remains necessary when software chooses the wrong sound.
Security requirements often look like random failures
The most sensitive Continuity features also have the most prerequisites. Mirroring an iPhone, controlling another device, unlocking a Mac or synchronizing credentials should require more proof than sending a photo to a visible AirDrop recipient.
The security model is defensible, but Apple often presents a failed policy as simple nonappearance. The expected Mac, iPad or iPhone vanishes from the interface without a precise explanation.
Universal Control can fail because the devices use different Apple Accounts, two-factor authentication is unavailable or Handoff is disabled. Distance and network restrictions can produce the same visible result.
AirDrop adds discoverability, wake state, hotspot and contact-card requirements. Continuity Camera adds permissions, camera state and account conditions, while iPhone Mirroring adds region, trust, lock state and incompatible Mac services.
Calls and messaging must also follow the carrier's rules. Siri AI adds language, hardware and geographic restrictions that may differ among devices using the same Apple Account.
Managed devices introduce another mostly invisible layer. Apple's management guide allows organizations to restrict cross-device features, credential sharing, cameras, screen sharing and other services.
A supervised iPhone and a personally owned iPhone with matching hardware can behave differently. When the interface doesn't name the policy, an administrative restriction can look like an ordinary Continuity defect.
Apple could reduce the confusion with a cross-device status panel showing which devices are trusted, which permissions connect them and which requirement is blocking a feature.
The company already exposes pieces of that information. The iPhone lists approved Mirroring computers, Home controls speaker access and AirPlay receivers use separate permission settings.
Users still don't get one complete view showing what a Mac can access from an iPhone.
Hardware and regional limits divide the ecosystem
Continuity features often support older hardware than Apple's newest operating systems. Mixed-generation households can keep established connections while missing the newest context features.
macOS 27 runs on Apple silicon Macs rather than Intel models, as the compatibility list shows. An Intel Mac can remain on macOS 26 and continue using supported versions of Handoff, AirDrop, Universal Clipboard or Mac Virtual Display.
The Intel Mac can't receive features that require macOS 27, including Spatial Preview and the new Siri app. Supporting some Continuity features doesn't mean a device participates in every OS 27 connection.
Apple Watch shows the same divide. Older models may keep Auto Unlock on watchOS 26, while watchOS 27 and its new Siri or Find My features require a newer watch.
iOS and iPadOS create another division between operating-system compatibility and Apple Intelligence eligibility. A device can run iOS 27 or iPadOS 27 while lacking Siri conversation continuity.
Regional policy can divide a current hardware collection as sharply as an old processor. iPhone Mirroring remains unavailable in the EU, and Siri AI has different initial availability on mobile devices, Macs and Vision Pro.
Mainland China has separate Apple Intelligence conditions, while carrier-dependent calling and RCS features add more differences by country and network.
An Apple Account can identify the same owner across every product, but it can't override hardware, regulatory or carrier restrictions. The OS 27 releases make those boundaries more visible because Siri history is supposed to follow the user across product categories.
Apple TV and HomePod remain shared endpoints
Apple TV and HomePod participate in Continuity without receiving a comparable shared-context feature in Apple's 2026 announcements. The OS 27 changes for both products focus more heavily on media than on Siri history or structured cross-device work.
Apple TV already uses an iPhone or iPad as a remote, keyboard and Continuity Camera. The box can also receive AirPlay content and use HomePod as an audio output.
Connections to an iPhone, iPad or Siri Remote make Apple TV easier to control and add hardware the streaming box doesn't include. Apple TV still can't serve as a general destination for Universal Clipboard, iPhone Mirroring, passwords or arbitrary Handoff activities.
HomePod supports AirPlay, household audio, Home automation and proximity-based media transfer. Bringing an iPhone near a HomePod can move supported audio when both products use the required Apple Account, Home and network settings.
Apple's audio guide reflects HomePod's different trust model. Home settings can restrict playback to Home members, people on the same network or a wider nearby group, with an optional password.
Continuity follows a different trust model when Apple moves from worn devices to shared household equipment. A speaker in a room may serve several people, unlike AirPods that normally remain attached to one account holder.
Apple's home products were largely absent from the main Siri AI announcement. Future beta software or hardware could change their role, but Apple currently places shared context on authenticated personal screens.
Keeping Siri history away from household displays would also reduce the risk of accidental exposure. A synchronized conversation or private notification is easier to control on a personal device than on a television or speaker used by everyone in a room.
Apple's ecosystem therefore contains two different trust models. iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods and Vision Pro generally follow one person, while Apple TV and HomePod serve a household under wider permissions.
Apple's platform is the relationship among devices
Apple isn't merging its operating systems into one interface. The OS 27 releases keep each product specialized while allowing the user's work and context to move among them.
The iPhone remains the most portable camera, communications endpoint and store of personal app data. The Mac provides general-purpose apps and precise input, Apple Watch contributes worn identity, and Vision Pro handles spatial presentation.
AirPods follow the person, while Apple TV and HomePod extend the ecosystem into shared rooms. Continuity lets each product contribute its strongest capability without forcing every device to duplicate the others.
Continuity functions as Apple's operating system between operating systems, even though it isn't a separate product or protocol. The phrase captures the policies and connections that decide how separate devices work together.
Siri AI and Spatial Preview make that layer more consequential by moving conversation history and live structured content, not only webpages, copied images and active calls.
A rival can reproduce file sharing or phone mirroring as an isolated feature. Matching the complete experience requires identity, devices, accessories, operating systems, local networking and cloud services to follow compatible rules.
Apple loses much of that advantage when the rules remain invisible. A feature that disappears without explaining whether the cause is region, account, hardware, network or administration turns integration into guesswork.
The next major Continuity improvement should be organizational rather than another standalone feature. Apple needs one place to show which devices trust each other, what they can share and why a requested connection is unavailable.
Apple is moving toward a shared computing environment without merging its operating systems. The company still needs clearer documentation, stronger privacy controls and more reliable connections, but the OS 27 changes show where Continuity is heading.
