A leak shows off several camera-focused features that Apple will introduce with iOS 27 later this week. This includes exposure scopes, with waveform and histogram displays to monitor exposure easily.
Apple will also presumably add focus peaking support to the iPhone’s stock Camera app.
Pro camera tools could come to your iPhone
Apple already showed off some Camera app-related improvements in iOS 27 at WWDC26. But the company is reportedly planning to introduce more camera-centric changes, likely paired with the iPhone 18 Pro’s camera upgrades.
Based on the source code in iOS 27 developer beta 8, a leaker has detailed several such changes. As per the report, “the Camera app in iOS 27 contains a complete implementation of waveform and histogram displays.” This will help users monitor exposure across shadows, mid-tones and highlights.
Apple will seemingly ship three presets in iOS 27 for waveform and histogram: RGB Composite, RGB Parade and Luminance.
Additionally, iOS 27’s Camera app may add focus peaking and highlight clipping support. The former will highlight areas of the image that are in focus, making them easier to identify. Similarly, highlight clipping will help identify areas of an image where the highlights are clipped due to overexposure.
iPhone 18 Pro could unlock more camera controls
The leaker says Apple has also tested manual focus support in the Camera app. It seems to be tied to the aperture control feature on the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro.
“While the Focus slider and the code to respond to user input was removed in beta 1, Apple added an explicit capability check that checks the device’s first supported iOS version. The current capability check requires a compatible iPhone with a first release of iOS 27 or later, meaning that the feature is not compatible with any existing iPhone,” says the leaker in his Reddit post.
There’s another change that Apple is making to the Camera app processing, with variable aperture in mind. iOS 27 will allow you to “choose and blend lens correction data based on the aperture value.” In other words, this will help compensate for light distribution across the image.
While all the above features may not eventually go live, Apple should demo some of them during the iPhone 18 Pro launch event on September 9.
