iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to have largely the same dimensions as their predecessors, except in one key area: the camera plateau. Here’s why iPhone 18 Pro’s camera bump is expected to get even larger this year.

Last fall, rumors indicated iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max would be thicker and heavier than iPhone 17 Pro.
However, only recently did we learn that the additional thickness would be limited to one specific area: the camera plateau. The rest of the iPhone is identical in thickness to last year.
YouTuber Vadim Yuryev shared a hands-on with dummy models back in April that revealed iPhone 18 Pro’s plateau thickness, including the cameras, is a significant increase from iPhone 17 Pro.
- iPhone 18 Pro Max thickness including cameras: 13.77mm
- iPhone 17 Pro Max thickness including cameras: 12.92mm
Most of the increase is due to camera size, but the aluminum plateau itself is thicker too.
Why this change? A new post from Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station helps explain it. Per Google Translate, his post says:
The iPhone 18 Pro series features a 48MP ultra-large sensor with a variable aperture
Variable aperture has been rumored for iPhone 18 Pro’s Main camera for a while. But his emphasis on sensor size is especially relevant to the device’s thickness.
Apple has pretty steadily increased the size of its iPhone camera lenses over the years. And that’s going to happen again.
Thanks to this new ultra-large Main sensor, variable aperture, and rumors of big Telephoto upgrades too, it seems we’ll see an especially notable size increase for not only the camera plateau, but the lenses too.
