A new leak claims Apple is testing a nearly 7-inch panel that could become the iPhone 20 Pro Max display. If it makes it to production, this would become the largest screen Apple ever put on a phone.
The huge panel would arrive as part of Apple’s 20th-anniversary iPhone lineup next year. Apple hasn’t increased its flagship screen size since 2024, but this could be a real sign that the company is once again planning to do so.
iPhone 20 Pro Max display could beat everything before it
When the original iPhone debuted in 2007, its 3.5-inch display was considered spacious. Over the years, screen sizes kept increasing — 4 inches, then 5.5 inches, then 5.8 inches. Today’s flagship, the iPhone 17 Pro Max, features a 6.9-inch display — nearly double the diagonal measurement of the original iPhone. And next year’s 20th anniversary iPhone reportedly will keep pushing up the size.
That’s based on a claim from Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station, who has a solid track record on Apple’s supply chain plans. In the post, the leaker says Apple is internally testing a display measuring roughly 6.96 inches. That’s exactly the type of number that would get marketed as a “7 inch” screen.
Digital Chat Station says the rumored 7-inch panel shares the same screen ratio as the iPhone 17 Pro Max, meaning Apple won’t need to reinvent the shape of the display. Still, the leaker notes that the panel is only being internally tested right now.
Whether it ships inside the iPhone 20 Pro Max remains unconfirmed. Think of this as Apple auditioning ideas backstage, long before anything reaches the big stage next year.
Celebrating 20 years of iPhone
A jump to 7 inches would be a bigger leap than you’d think. It also lines up with everything else we’ve heard about the 20th-anniversary iPhone. Several reports have pointed to an edge-to-edge display with curved glass wrapping around all four sides.
If it materializes, it would give the phone a nearly borderless look that Apple has been chasing for years.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported last month that Apple is ramping up work on two 20th-anniversary models. Both are expected to come in similar sizes to this year’s iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 18 Pro Max, powered by a new A21 chip.
What this means for you
If you’ve been holding out for a bigger iPhone screen, 2027 could be your year. Just don’t expect Apple to spill the beans any time soon. Screen sizes, in particular, are easy for Apple to change late in development.
For now, treat the 7-inch iPhone 20 Pro Max display as an exciting possibility instead of a done deal. Apple’s 20th anniversary phone remains more than a year away, and there’s plenty of time for those numbers to move. But one thing feels certain: Apple is thinking bigger for its biggest iPhone milestone yet.
