Apple’s AirPods with cameras just got a lot less mysterious. Buried in the macOS 26.7 release candidate’s code is a hidden framework that reveals exactly how the earbuds will perceive and process the world around you.

The discovery goes far beyond the recently leaked demo video spotted in the same code. It details resolution numbers, capture modes, calibration systems and a built-in privacy light. This gives us the clearest picture yet of the long-rumored AirPods upgrade.

How AirPods with cameras could capture photos

Rather than snapping high-resolution images, Apple’s rumored camera-equipped AirPods will let the earbuds see and interpret the world around the wearer, feeding visual context into Apple’s AI systems.

That could put Apple’s first AI wearables on a collision course with a growing backlash over always-on cameras, from Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses to Flock surveillance cameras. The difference is that AirPods with cameras might be far less obvious to anyone being recorded, even if they’re not designed to capture photos or videos.

Apple’s privacy reputation could help sell the idea, but the company will face a big question: In a world already uneasy about ubiquitous cameras, how do you make wearable AI feel useful rather than creepy?

According to the latest findings in the macOS 26.7 code, spotted by a sharp-eyed AirPods enthusiast going through the framework line by line and posting on MacRumors’ forums, each earbud will pack a camera sensor. Apple reportedly labels the hardware “Kino” internally, with separate camera components tracked for the left and right AirPods. The two sensors work as a pair, not independent cameras.

Also, they shoot in color, not infrared, as previously believed. The system reportedly pulls RGB image data from each earbud, with macOS treating a photo as complete only when both earbuds return frames with matching IDs. If one earbud fails to produce an image, the system might fall back to an empty placeholder instead of failing outright, according to the researcher.

The AirPods camera’s image resolution depends on the mode. An “active” capture, likely triggered by a Siri request, starts with a 640×640 image, outputting a sharper 1024×1024 frame (just over 1 megapixel). A “passive” mode captures images at 320×320 and can output either 320×320 or 512×512 images, depending on the context.

Passive mode sounds like constant background awareness

The AirPods camera’s passive capture mode reacts to the wearer’s surroundings automatically.

The code references five triggers for passive capture: nearby speech, a shift in the ambient audio scene, a change in posture, head rotation, and moving outside a defined spatial radius.

It remains unclear how every trigger actually fires. But the pattern suggests AirPods could capture images even when you’re not asking them to look at anything.

Given how much your head moves during a normal day, that constant awareness does need some correction to be accurate. The framework also includes lens distortion correction, calibration between the two cameras and between the cameras and the AirPods’ motion sensors. It can also toss out images that are either blurry or blocked from view.

Some processing happens locally

The AirPods with cameras don’t send every task to the wearer’s iPhone or Mac, according to the researcher who dug into the code. The framework mentions “peripheral inference,” which enables each AirPod to detect if a person is in frame.

This doesn’t sound specifically like a privacy feature, though.

“I could not find any code that showed that AirPods may suppress images when another person is detected in the image capture,” the researcher wrote. “In fact, the person detection mentioned above has a ‘person not detected, sent the image anyways’ result, which points in the opposite direction.”

Speaking of privacy, it looks like each AirPod will pack a physical indicator light. The framework would remotely control the light and its brightness, showing when the cameras activate.

Not for capturing images or video

While the idea of AirPods constantly capturing imagery raises concerns about possible privacy invasions — with some people already labeling the rumored devices “pervertpods” — that’s not what the low-resolution sensors are all about, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

“They won’t be designed to take photos or video; rather, they’re meant to scan the surrounding environment and provide context to the Siri digital assistant and other AI tools,” Gurman reported Wednesday after the AirPods camera video leaked.

This may not be the final hardware

The AirPods shown in that leaked clip earlier this week were reportedly a version of the AirPods Pro 3 code-named B790. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said Apple is also working on a newer generation code-named B798.

Although this week’s leaks make it seem like AirPods with cameras might arrive soon, Gurman said the first such earbuds won’t arrive until 2027, possibly alongside the 20th anniversary iPhone.

Whether the final AirPods keep all these exact camera specs remains to be seen, but the blueprint revealed in the macOS 26.7 code provides a strong sense of Apple’s direction.
