Apple quietly updated its Magic Keyboard with MacBook-style symbol-only keycaps. The real shock? The price actually stayed the same.
Updated store images show glyphs replacing the written labels on the Tab, Caps Lock, Shift, Return, and Delete keys. The symbols match those introduced on the latest MacBook Pro and MacBook Air keyboards in March.
The five replacement glyphs are:
- Tab
- Caps Lock
- Shift
- Return
- Delete
The change appears across the standard model priced at $99 and the compact Touch ID version priced at $149. Apple's extended keyboard with Touch ID and a numeric keypad also shows the new glyphs with both white keys for $179 and black keys for $199.
Those are the same prices Apple charged when it introduced the USB-C versions in October 2024. The names, specifications, and compatibility requirements remain unchanged, but Apple has assigned each keyboard a new part number and marked the listings as new.
The keycaps now use the same symbols macOS displays in menus and keyboard-shortcut instructions, so experienced Mac users should already recognize them. The revision brings Apple's US English standalone keyboards into line with its newest MacBooks and some international layouts.
Apple hasn't announced the revision or said when keyboards with the updated keycaps began shipping. Older versions may remain available through third-party retailers while existing inventory clears.
