After weeks of testing, Apple has released macOS Golden Gate 27.2. Officially it's a minor release, but under the hood changes are preparing the way for touch-screen Macs.

As previously revealed during the beta testing period, macOS 27.2 has introduced a cosmetic change to Apple Music. It's part of a wider rebrand that includes a new video sting for music productions. Now that macOS 27.2 has been released as the official current OS for the Mac, there are a few visual changes.

Apple Music's logo and refreshed color scheme is the most visible update, with the old red highlights being replaced by blue. But there are also changes to the volume and brightness controls.

If you access those through the keyboard, they now step down in small but distinct steps instead of on a continuous line.

More significantly, Siri AI has been updated to support five more languages:

  • French
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Portuguese
  • Spanish

There are also general performance security updates, plus bug fixes.

What will ultimately make this a notable release, though, is that it includes many features to do with touch control. This is the release that features touch tools inside Apple apps such as Safari and Photos.

They're not apparent yet, as in Apple does not describe or demonstrate them. But they mean that macOS Golden Gate is now ready for the expected OLED touch-screen version of MacBook Pro.

The new macOS 27.2 runs on the same list of Macs that support version 27. It's the macOS edition that will now come pre-installed on all new Macs.

If your Mac is able to run macOS 27.2, you will be prompted to update to it. However, it can be weeks before you're prompted, and you can instead go to System Settings, General, Software Update to request it be installed now.

However, AppleInsider always recommends that you wait at least a few days after a macOS update. Even a comparatively minor one is significant because the OS touches everything and any problems can be severe.

Wait for other users to find those problems, and for Apple to fix them.
