Apple's new iPad mini has slimmed down with a thinner, narrower design, but those minor changes could make your perfectly good old case a lousy fit.
The OLED upgrade increases the display size from 8.3 inches to 8.5 inches while keeping roughly the same footprint. However, Apple's published measurements reveal several physical differences that could affect case compatibility.
The sixth-generation iPad mini from 2021 and the A17 Pro model from 2024 have identical dimensions of 195.4 mm tall, 134.8 mm wide, and 6.3 mm thick.
The 2026 model measures 195.3 mm tall, 132.6 mm wide, and 5.4 mm thick, according to Apple's technical specifications. The height difference is just 0.1 mm, but the reductions in width and thickness could affect how older cases grip the device.
Will older iPad mini cases still fit?
Rigid snap-on cases are the biggest concern because they rely on a close fit around the tablet's edges. A case molded for the older dimensions could leave the new iPad mini loose around the sides, although the actual fit hasn't been tested.
| Specification | iPad mini 6/7 | iPad mini (A20 Pro) | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Height | 195.4 mm | 195.3 mm | 0.1 mm |
| Width | 134.8 mm | 132.6 mm | 2.2 mm |
| Thickness | 6.3 mm | 5.4 mm | 0.9 mm |
| Display | 8.3 inches | 8.5 inches | +0.2 inches |
Flexible silicone and TPU cases might accommodate the smaller enclosure, but their ability to hold it securely will depend on the design. Magnetic folios are another possibility because they attach without gripping the tablet's edges.
However, it's unclear whether the magnets in older folios will align correctly with the new model. Apple's existing Smart Folio officially supports the sixth-generation and A17 Pro iPad mini models. The new A20 Pro model isn't included in that compatibility list as of 10:00 AM ET on October 26.
The company has also introduced a redesigned TechWoven Smart Folio for the 2026 iPad mini, priced at $79. It features a two-panel construction and additional viewing angles, although the new accessory doesn't establish that older magnetic covers are incompatible.
The new iPad mini becomes available November 6 starting at $699, following preorders beginning October 28. Until case manufacturers confirm compatibility with the 2026 model, buyers shouldn't assume existing cases will provide a secure fit.
