A new report from Omdia provides updates on release timing, the OLED display, and more for the upcoming MacBook Pro overhaul, which rumors say will be called MacBook Ultra.
MacBook Ultra could arrive sooner than expected, per Omdia
Research firm Omdia has a new report out today covering the growing trend of OLED adoption in laptops. As part of covering the broader market, the report mentions several key details about Apple’s upcoming MacBook Ultra (or MacBook Pro, if that’s how it’s branded).
One particularly surprising detail involves release timing.
After mentioning that Samsung will provide displays for the two sizes of MacBook Ultra starting in July, the report says “with the devices expected to launch in 3Q 2026.”
A third-quarter launch would almost certainly mean a September debut, as Apple tends not launch major new products in July or August.
We’ve been expecting the MacBook Ultra to launch no earlier than October or November, with early 2027 possible too. If a third-quarter launch happens, that means we will likely see the new Mac at the iPhone event.
Screen sizes and OLED display technology detailed
Beyond release timing, the report says Apple’s new laptop will come in two screen sizes: 14.3 inches and 16.3 inches.
Currently, the MacBook Pro is available in 14.2-inch and 16.2-inch sizes, so the discrepancy is either a rounding error, or the MacBook Ultra screen will be slightly larger.
Finally, Omdia highlights the specific technology being used for the MacBook Ultra’s tandem OLED, and mentions benefits for power consumption:
“Apple is adopting hybrid OLED for the MacBook Pro series based on oxide TFT and RGB tandem OLED technology,” said Jerry Kang, Practice Leader at Omdia. “This combination is being used for the first time in this form factor and is designed to reduce power consumption compared to LTPO and RGB single OLEDs.”
These display changes could allow the MacBook Ultra to offer comparable battery life to current MacBook Pro models, even with a thinner design.
