Last week Sonos unveiled several new features coming to its app soon, and now the first of those upgrades are here in the ‘Sonos 27’ app update. Here are the details.
Here’s what Sonos says is new and coming soon with Sonos 27 software

Following the example of iOS 27 and others, Sonos is moving to a ‘Sonos 27’ naming scheme for its software platform.
Today via a new app update on the App Store, Sonos 27 has officially arrived. How do you know if your hardware is compatible? Sonos says it’s available for “all Sonos S2 products,” though feature availability can vary by product.
Here’s what’s available now, per Sonos:
- Portable Surrounds: ”Two of the same portable Sonos speakers (Move 2 or Sonos Play) can become rear surrounds when paired with a compatible soundbar, then return to their original role when moved, giving existing hardware more utility without a dedicated home theater setup.”
- New Sonos 27app navigation: “A redesigned app with simpler navigation, swipe gestures and pinned rooms for faster control.”
- Headphone Linking (Early Access): “Ace Ultra headphones connects to your Sonos system, letting listeners push and pull sound between nearby speakers and their ears without a phone as the middleman.”
- Sonos 27mcp (Early Access): ”Connect AI assistants including ChatGPT and Claude to Sonos giving you more choice, rather than locking listeners into a single assistant.”

Sonos has also highlighted two more features coming soon:
- Sonos 27voice (Later this Fall): “Sonos’ own music-focused assistant, reinforcing that no single AI needs to own the home and building around consumer choice.”
- Sonos Custom Agents (2027): “Lets people create their own agents within the system, each with its own model, persona and voice.”
Sonos caused quite a stir a few years ago when it launched a major new app redesign. Today’s new navigation revamp appears a much smaller change, so hopefully it won’t create any controversy.
