Seven years and tons of rumors have finally led to Apple revealing the iPhone Duo, a squat foldable smartphone packed with features and compromises at an incredible price point.
The foldable market is filled with expensive devices that address an incredibly niche market, but Apple pursued it anyway. Its first foldable is the iPhone Duo, and rumors managed to nail what to expect.
The "Surprise and Shine" Apple Event is still underway and the iPhone Duo has barely been revealed. The squat folding form factor shows a short and wide external display, two rear cameras, and a hinge that opens the device into a larger inner display.
And yes, that's right, it's iPhone Duo, not iPhone Ultra or iPhone Fold. The rumors never quite landed on the correct name except in the loosest of speculation.
iPhone Duo rethinks iOS
Apple designed iPhone Duo to provide a dual-screen experience that acknowledges the external display as necessary. The hardware and software blends in a way to ensure the whole display area is taken advantage of.
A full-screen experience like no other iPhone
The case is made from titanium, has Ceramic Shield glass on the rear, and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front display. Whether the device is open, closed, on its side, or half-open, iOS reacts as needed.
iOS apps prioritize content and use sidebars to take advantage of the larger displays. StandBy mode was also rethought to enable clocks and widgets even when power isn't applied.
Apple even included a special animation that occurs when opening and closing the device. It makes it appear as if the software is being blurred and pulled into the different form factors.

Developers' work to add sidebars and scalability to their UI shouldn't need to do much, if anything, to support iPhone Duo. Some apps, like Netflix, already have special features that take advantage of the dual-display design.
Apps can be placed in Split View, FaceTime can show content on the front and back display while using both camera systems, and the device will intelligently adjust content based on orientation.
A crease-less display
Apple prioritized making a display that won't distort or crease over time. Each layer focuses on providing the best experience and superior viewing experiences.
Apple worked to prevent display creases and distortions
The inner display has a selfie camera hidden under the screen, though it is slightly visible depending on what is shown on screen. Apple designed a matte nano-texture display using textures that ensure everything you're viewing is visible while remaining clear.
The inner display is 7.6 inches while the outer display is 5.4 inches, and both are Super Retina XDR displays. They feature ProMotion, Always On, and 3,000 nits of brightness.
Apple also announced Apple Pencil with USB-C support coming later in the year. Rumors indicated Apple had attempted a magnetic mount, but it proved awkward for opening and closing the device.
iPhone Duo cameras
Everything about the iPhone Duo is multiplied from other models, and that includes the camera systems. Sure, there are only two rear cameras, but there's also an outer selfie camera and an inner FaceTime camera.

The 48MP Fusion Main camera is new, though it lacks a variable aperture. It captures 24MP images by default and can take a 2x Telephoto shot for a bit of zoom.
The 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera is the same as the one in the iPhone 18 Pro models. It also enables the macro photography feature.
A new Photographic Styles system brings texture and grain control to photos.
The only thing missing from the iPhone 18 Pro models, other than variable aperture, is the 4x Telephoto optical lens. It's a compromise for those that want the most in photography from their iPhone, but not a significant loss.
The iPhone Duo has some interesting use cases enabled by the dual inner and outer display. Users can take selfies using the rear cameras and preview themselves on the outer display, for example.
Set the iPhone Duo down to capture images hands-free
The device can be laid flat and opened partway to angle the rear cameras, using it as a makeshift tripod. Lay the device horizontally or vertically, and a new Smart Take feature will capture photos when everyone is posed.
Apple also borrowed a popular Android foldable feature called Kid Cue. It can play fun animations on the external display so kids' focus can be captured for photos.
A20 and C2
Apple's A20 processor is built on the latest 2nm technology. It has a 6-core CPU with two super cores and four efficiency cores.
iPhone Duo has complex hinge mechanisms and active cooling measures
The GPU has a 7-core design with up to 40% faster graphics performance. The neural accelerators are twice as fast with floating-point math.
There are two Neural Engines with 32 total cores for twice the AI compute power. It's all central to iPhone Duo being an Intelligent Personal Hub.
Apple redesigned the physical design of the package around how M-series chips are built. It has also been designed with thermals in mind.
The dual battery system allows for up to 31 hours of video viewing on the inner display and 24 hours of use using both displays.
iPhone Duo comes in blue or silver colors
The C2 modem is also included in the iPhone Duo.
Even though the iPhone Duo houses dual displays and batteries, it isn't too thick or heavy. It is Apple's thinnest iPhone when open, 0.44 inches when closed, and weighs 8.96 ounces.
For comparison, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is 0.34 inches thick and weighs 8.78 ounces.
iPhone Duo price and release date
The iPhone Duo comes in white and blue options starting at $1,999 with 256GB of storage. Pre orders begin on October 16 and launch October 23.
