Mac users can finally run their favorite Wallpaper Engine animated backgrounds natively without booting up Windows. Here's how to get it done, and what the limitations are today.

Wallpaper Engine lets people create animated desktop backgrounds, including scenes that respond to music or the mouse pointer. Users share their creations through Steam Workshop, Steam's service for distributing user-created content.

Developer James Goodnight says Vivid Walls is designed to render those scene files directly on a Mac using its own graphics engine. The app isn't affiliated with Wallpaper Engine, and Goodnight says it doesn't require Windows to display imported scenes.

Our hands-on testing covered Vivid Walls' bundled videos, playback controls, library features, and importing a 4K video wallpaper through its Wallpaper Engine importer. We didn't test interactive scene files, so these results don't establish how accurately the app reproduces their effects or behavior.

We used Vivid Walls 1.2.4 on an M3 MacBook Air with 16GB of memory and a prerelease version of macOS 27. The beta operating system is relevant to the startup warning we encountered and the performance observations below.

Starting with the bundled wallpapers

Vivid Walls requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later and a Mac with an M1 chip or newer. Alongside its advertised scene support, the app accepts videos, web content, still images, and GIFs.

Eight backgrounds come with the app, covering city, beach, forest, fireplace, and space themes. In the version we examined, all eight were 1080p videos lasting nine or 15 seconds, even though several have "Scene" in their names.

The included clips let users try a moving desktop immediately, but they don't demonstrate interactive scene playback. A video repeats a recorded sequence, while a scene can change its behavior as it runs.

Applying a bundled video was immediate. Vivid Walls showed the selected wallpaper beneath the Mac's display in the sidebar and marked the assigned item with a badge in the library.

The video controls offered Fill, Fit, Stretch, and Center alignment options, plus volume and playback-speed adjustments. Changing the speed, muting the wallpaper, and restoring its volume worked during our session.

We also saved a favorite and created a two-item playlist. Starting the playlist, advancing manually to the next wallpaper, and stopping playback worked as expected.

For automatic rotation, the interface offers intervals from five minutes to four hours and a custom option. We tried manual advancement but didn't wait for a timed transition.

Vivid Walls also supports separate wallpaper assignments for each display, according to its documentation. We had only the MacBook Air's built-in screen available for testing.

Goodnight's display guide identifies a restriction for anyone planning a rotating collection across several screens. Only one playlist can run at a time, although fixed wallpapers on other displays can remain active.

A warning about automatic startup

Vivid Walls retained the selected wallpaper, favorite, and playlist after we completely quit and relaunched the app. Configuring automatic startup was less straightforward.

Although "Launch Vivid Walls at login" was enabled, the app warned that it couldn't change the login item and directed us to System Settings. We didn't verify the suggested manual setup or test a subsequent login.

Because our Mac was running beta software, the warning doesn't establish how automatic startup behaves on released versions of macOS.

Bringing a Wallpaper Engine collection to Mac

Vivid Walls doesn't include a Steam Workshop browser. Users without an existing collection can begin with the bundled backgrounds or import their own compatible files.

For people with Wallpaper Engine installed on a Windows PC, Goodnight provides a free companion app to transfer the library. The companion locates the collection and makes it available to the Mac over the local network.

According to the transfer instructions, both computers must be on the same network. The Mac discovers the companion, pairs using a four-character code, and lets users select wallpapers to copy.

Goodnight says the transfer does not require a Vivid Walls account, and sends files directly between the computers without a cloud upload. The Mac's interface also offers a manual address and port if automatic discovery fails, although we didn't complete a transfer.

An existing backup provides another import option. Goodnight says Vivid Walls can open scene files and wallpaper folders directly, and the Mac interface includes File Import Wallpaper Engine Library for a copied collection.

Wallpaper Engine's official backup guide places downloaded wallpapers under steamapps\workshop\content\431960 within the Steam installation. Each wallpaper has a numbered subfolder, and the full path depends on where Steam was installed.

Someone who kept those files after leaving Windows therefore has a route to try without reconnecting the original PC. Having only a Workshop link isn't the same as having the files Vivid Walls needs to import.

We tested the folder-import route with "Fishing Frogs by Abi Toads," a wallpaper folder containing project.json, a preview GIF, and a one-minute, 3840-by-2160 MP4. Vivid Walls identified it as compatible and reported a successful import.

After we applied it, the wallpaper animated on the Mac's desktop. This confirmed the folder-import process for that video, not interactive scene compatibility.

What the developer says about scene compatibility

Goodnight describes Vivid Walls as a native Metal app that reads Wallpaper Engine scene files. Metal is Apple's graphics technology, and he says the renderer doesn't rely on Windows, Wine, or a virtual machine.

His compatibility list includes custom visual effects, particles, character animation, pointer interaction, and sound-reactive scenes. He also describes support for SceneScript, Wallpaper Engine's scripting language for adding custom behavior, while acknowledging that support isn't complete yet.

Scenes built around 3D models and wallpapers packaged as Windows executables aren't supported, Goodnight says. Web wallpapers have partial support, and some scenes with complex combinations of visual effects can render incorrectly.

Importing a wallpaper doesn't guarantee that Vivid Walls will reproduce all of its animation, effects, and interactions. A collection can contain files the app accepts but doesn't display correctly.

Performance and battery controls

Our brief performance check covered one bundled 1080p video, not the imported 4K wallpaper. Activity Monitor reported approximately 5.5% to 7.4% CPU use across repeated samples, while Vivid Walls' dashboard showed about 5.8% to 7%.

Memory readings ranged from roughly 91MB to 124MB. Activity Monitor also showed an Energy Impact value of about 6.8 while the Mac was running on battery.

Apple defines Energy Impact as a relative measure of current energy consumption. The reading isn't a battery-drain percentage, and our spot check doesn't establish how much battery runtime the wallpaper costs or how imported scenes would perform.

The settings on our Mac included a cap of 30 frames per second, a reduction to 15 fps on battery, and pausing after 15 minutes of inactivity. The Scene FPS field displayed dashes for the bundled video, so it didn't let us verify the video's frame rate or confirm the battery reduction.

Goodnight says Vivid Walls pauses when the desktop is fully covered or another app enters full screen. He also describes support for Low Power Mode and a reduced frame rate under thermal pressure.

The display guide adds an important qualification for multiple-monitor setups. Pausing applies across the app, and the covered-window rule takes effect only when every wallpaper window is covered.

With Activity Monitor occupying a full-screen Space, Vivid Walls still registered CPU readings of 6.6%, 5.5%, and 5.8%. Continued CPU activity doesn't prove the wallpaper kept playing, because a paused app can still perform other work.

We couldn't confirm full-screen pausing from those samples. Goodnight says performance depends on the wallpaper and the Mac.

Audio access and privacy

Sound-reactive wallpapers need access to the audio playing on the Mac. Goodnight says Vivid Walls captures system audio and never uses the microphone, consistent with the app's privacy policy.

According to his explanation, macOS 14.0 and 14.1 show a Screen Recording permission request, while macOS 14.2 and later provide an audio capture prompt. He says declining audio access disables the sound-reactive behavior without preventing ordinary wallpaper playback.

Automation permission serves a separate purpose. Goodnight says it lets music widgets read Now Playing information from Apple's Music app or Spotify, and declining it removes album artwork.

The settings we examined also included a separate option for reading YouTube information from a browser. It was disabled by default, and we didn't test it.

The privacy policy says captured audio is processed locally without being stored or transmitted. It also states that Vivid Walls collects no personal information, analytics, telemetry, or crash reports.

The App Store displays a no-data-collected label. Apple notes that the disclosure comes from the developer and hasn't been independently verified.

Lock-screen wallpapers use an exported video

Vivid Walls' lock-screen feature uses a recording of the wallpaper. Goodnight says the app creates a 4K HEVC video and adds it to the catalog macOS uses for aerial wallpapers.

He says the feature edits the catalog directly because Apple doesn't provide a documented interface for the integration. A Remove button in the export sheet deletes the video and its catalog entry.

Once a wallpaper is exported, macOS handles playback without Vivid Walls remaining open, according to the developer's guide. Goodnight says Automation permission lets the app refresh the lock screen after an export; without permission, the export appears after the next login.

We couldn't test export or removal because no export control appeared for the bundled video we examined. The missing control doesn't tell us whether export is available for other wallpaper types.

Price and a planned trial

The U.S. Mac App Store lists Vivid Walls at $9.99 as a one-time purchase. Goodnight says he plans an update that would make the app a free download with a three-day trial of all its features.

He says the proposed unlock price would remain $9.99, and existing buyers would retain access. The trial wasn't yet available in the storefront we checked.

The planned trial would let users test their own wallpapers before paying. Testing would be particularly useful for wallpapers with scripts or complex effects that Vivid Walls might not reproduce correctly.

Vivid Walls gave us a working animated desktop with both its bundled videos and an imported 4K video wallpaper. Its playback and library controls handled the tasks we tried.

Those results support its basic video-wallpaper functions, but the accuracy of its interactive Wallpaper Engine scene playback remains unverified in our testing.
