Visual Intelligence ads could be headed for your iPhone. Code buried in iOS 27 suggests Apple is exploring a new way to slip sponsored results into its camera-based search tool.

The change won’t have Apple selling the ad slots directly. Instead, search providers like Google may supply sponsored images. And these could sit right on top of the results Visual Intelligence already shows you.

Visual Intelligence ads could work like Amazon and Google listings

Point your iPhone’s camera at a product, and Visual Intelligence helps you look for similar items across the web. The feature already leans on partners like Google Image Search, Etsy and Amazon to pull those results together.

The newly spotted code in the next iPhone operating system hints that those results may soon come with a sponsored label attached. Think of it as the type of paid placement you already scroll past on Amazon or Google. You search for something and a product image appears in the results… except a brand paid to put it there.

Aaron Perris spotted the code and shared his findings in a post on X. He wrote that Apple would let search providers insert their own sponsored results.

This apparently means that Apple itself won’t run the ad sales. It’s also unclear whether Apple would take a cut of that revenue, though that seems likely.

That distinction matters. While Apple won’t be the one hawking ad space to brands directly, it would effectively open the door and let its search partners walk through with sponsored content attached.

It’s too early to say anything for sure

Nothing about this is locked in yet. The code currently lives in iOS 27 beta, but Apple hasn’t said a word about it publicly. Features like these sometimes ship, but are also prone to quietly disappearing before launch.

Still, the timing matters. Apple has spent the last year building out its advertising business in ways that would seem unlikely a few years ago. A few months ago, the App Store picked up extra sponsored search slots. And ads started showing up in Apple Maps last month.

Visual Intelligence would seem to be a logical next stop. It’s a feature people use to shop already. That makes it prime real estate for the kind of sponsored placement you’d typically find in a retail app.

Apple has spent years selling the idea that it’s not Amazon or Google, and that your data isn’t the product. Ads creeping into Maps was one thing. Ads showing up while you’re pointing your camera at something feels like a bigger shift.

If this actually ships, expect it to be framed as helpful rather than intrusive. A sponsored search result that happens to be exactly what you were already looking for could be useful. Whether iPhone users buy that framing is a different question entirely.
