watchOS 27 code reveals four changes for Apple Watch Ultra 4, more

Apple Watch Ultra 4 and Series 12 will be unveiled tomorrow, and a last-minute leak may reveal new features coming in watchOS 27 for the latest models and more.

New Apple Watch features could include Readiness app, richer strength training options, more

In the last few days, X user pdfu has posted several discoveries from Apple code that hadn’t previously been revealed.

He shared evidence that HomePod will gain surround sound and “party mode” features, and also detailed several pro-focused photography features reportedly coming to iOS 27’s Camera app.

More recently, pdfu has also posted an X article detailing several Apple Watch changes uncovered in watchOS 27 code.

His findings relate to four main features:

New Readiness app
Richer strength workouts
New optical-sensing system for Apple Watch
Hints about 128GB of storage

Regarding the Readiness app, pdfu writes:

The watchOS 27 launcher includes it in its default Home Screen layout ordering immediately after the Workout app. The Watch companion app on iOS 27 also references the same Readiness app in its implementation for arranging apps.

No further specifics are shared, but the app’s name combined with its placement next to Workout suggests functionality similar to what competing third-party wearables like the Oura Ring offer.

Update: Mark Gurman says Readiness will be a variant of the Vitals app.

Regarding strength workouts, it sounds like Apple may be building a full-featured competitor to other strength training apps, but right inside Workout. For example, “The new implementation can describe individual sets and store repetition counts, weight, equipment, body side, and duration for each set.”

The new optical-sensing system corroborates rumors that Apple Watch Ultra 4 and perhaps Series 12 will boast a ton of internal sensor changes. Finally, there’s evidence that the new S-class chip for Apple’s latest Watch models will offer 128GB of storage.

Some of these changes seem tied to new hardware while others, like the Readiness app, will hopefully be available in watchOS 27 for older models too.
