The latest app to adapt to the new iPhone Duo is Google Maps, which now fills both displays to make maximum use of the device's screens. Here's what it looks like.
It's still early days for developers and the iPhone Duo, so it's still the case that very many iOS apps look poor on the new device. But those developers who weren't ready on day one, are now starting to support the benefits of the device.
Google Maps for iPhone has now been updated to version 26.44.4 expressly to add iPhone Duo support. As always, Google's App Store notes say only that the release features bug fixes, but if you're an existing user, you will see the real benefit immediately.
Previously, the outer screen had Google Maps slightly offset to the left, leaving room for the new iOS dock position. On the inside display, users got the regular iPhone app which could be moved to the left or right, but still left most of the screen unused.
Now both displays are full. It doesn't add very much to the outer display, although it's neater and very welcome.
On the inside, though, Google Maps is now this wide app with plenty of room for its menus and search box to the left. Now a map or satellite view fills the screen corner to corner, making it much more like Google Maps on the iPad.
Street View also benefits from the iPhone Duo's wider screen. Now by default, Street View takes up the left side of the screen, leaving the whole right for the map.
There doesn't appear to be a way to switch those to the opposite sides. However, Street View can be made to fill the entire screen, just as you readily can with Apple Maps's equivalent Look Around.
Closing the iPhone Duo while using Street View puts that part on the outer screen. But there is a close button that returns you to the map view.
Google Maps for iPhone is free on the App Store.
