The Apple Pro Display XDR is, by almost any measure, the most spectacular external monitor ever made for a Mac. Launched in 2019 at a price that shocked even committed Apple fans — $4,999 for the standard glass version, $5,999 for nano-texture, plus $999 for the Pro Stand — it takes your breath away for several reasons. A dozen great workstations below are the best Pro Display XDR setups in Cult of Mac‘s archive.

Best Pro Display XDR setups: Apple’s most magnificent monitor in the wild
The 32-inch 6K Retina Pro Display XDR display delivers 6,016 x 3,384 pixels, 1,600 nits of peak brightness, a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, P3 wide color gamut and XDR Extreme Dynamic Range. It is, as Apple puts it, “the world’s best pro display.”
And it looks the part on a desk. Its cheese-grater-textured aluminum back echoes the design language of the Mac Pro it was designed to serve. In several years of our Setups coverage, the XDR has appeared rarely enough that each sighting feels like an event. Some owners have one. Some have two. A fearless few have three. All of them know exactly what they paid. The following 12 setups represent the archive’s finest XDR appearances.
12. Hey, maybe you can afford a ‘Mini Pro Display XDR’ with your Mac Studio

Photo: Tom@bytereview@Twitter
If you can’t stretch to $5,000 for a Pro Display XDR, there is a workaround — sort of. A Mac Studio owner discovered that a 12.9-inch iPad Pro, connected to the Mac Studio on a stand at desktop height, functions as what commenters immediately called a “mini Pro Display XDR.” The 12.9-inch iPad Pro uses the same Liquid Retina XDR display technology as the full-size monitor — 2,732 x 2,048 pixels, ProMotion 120Hz, 1,000 nits full-screen brightness, 1,600 nits peak HDR — at a 12.9-inch size. “Woah — it’s the Apple cash register!” quipped a commenter on the side-by-side Mac Studio and iPad Pro. “A darn expensive one too,” Tom agreed. The setup’s NuPhy Studio Air60 mechanical keyboard completes a compact workstation that is approximately one-third the size and one-third the price of the real thing.

11. In this setup, everything pro, everything smart

Photo: Danny Winget
The year is 2020. A tech YouTuber Danny Winget assembles what was then arguably the most aspirational Mac setup on the internet: a Mac Pro — Apple’s most powerful desktop — paired with a Pro Display XDR on the $999 Pro Stand. The desk holds almost nothing else. “When tech YouTuber Danny Winget mapped out his dream setup, he was looking to achieve one thing: stark minimalism,” the article noted. The XDR is in standard glass; he bought the nano-texture version first but returned it after finding matte softened the image too much. The Pro Stand gets a diplomatic verdict: “nice,” but “completely unnecessary.” As an early XDR-in-the-wild document from when the monitor was still new and the Mac Pro was Apple’s current tower, this remains a historically notable setup entry.

10. If you can’t afford Apple’s Pro Display XDR, then what?

Photo: [email protected]
This early Setups article uses a spectacular setup as a jumping-off point for a practical community discussion about XDR alternatives. The user owns both a Mac Pro and an actual Pro Display XDR — the centerpiece of a setup that also features a massive custom-built motorized redwood desk clearly designed by someone with strong aesthetic opinions and the budget to match. But user also made the XDR’s case as an investment. “It’s honestly the best investment I’ve made,” they said. “It is so great to have so much resolution and screen quality.” The article then canvasses the alternatives — LG UltraFine 5K, Dell UltraSharp models, BenQ options — providing one of the archive’s most useful display-buying guides alongside one of its most beautiful standalone setups.

9. Apple-hating programmer now swears by Mac Studio, Pro Display XDR

Photo: [email protected]
The backstory here is the whole point. The setup belongs to the user’s wife — a Linux-loving software programmer who was once “strongly anti-Apple,” per her husband. Her conversion began with an M1 MacBook for its unprecedented battery life and cool operation. One thing led to another, and by the time this article appeared, the programmer was using a Mac Studio paired with a Pro Display XDR on an Ergotron monitor arm — the arm because she likes to bring the XDR close to her face. A Meta Quest VR headset is in the mix for “VR development on the side for personal projects.” The conversion arc from confirmed Apple-hater to Pro Display XDR owner is among the more dramatic in the Setups archive, and the setup itself is beautifully clean.

8. You paid how much for that Pro Display XDR?

Photo: [email protected]
The headline asks the question but the article buries the answer. The user bought his Pro Display XDR for substantially less than the $5,000 retail price — details undisclosed, but implied to be a genuinely good deal. The display drives an M1 Pro MacBook Pro setup that is otherwise notable for its audio gear: Yamaha HS7 near-field studio monitors, the same speakers used in professional recording facilities, positioned on either side of the XDR. A Keychron K2 Pro mechanical keyboard with RGB backlighting completes a setup that is at once aspirationally extravagant (the XDR) and practically grounded (a MacBook Pro rather than a Mac Pro). The article focuses warmly on the unlikely thriftiness embedded in one of the most expensive consumer displays on the market.

7. I want everything in this Mac Studio workstation

Photo: [email protected]
An M1 Max Mac Studio hidden in a drawer drives one of the most visually striking XDR setups in the archive. The 32-inch 6K Pro Display XDR is the centerpiece, flanked by a pair of Nanoleaf illuminated desktop pegboard docks. Those glowing, customizable stands had never before appeared in the Setups archive and prompted the article’s enthusiastic headline. One cradles a PlayStation 5 controller; the other holds Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones. Audioengine A5+ bookshelf speakers provide 150 watts of audio on either side. An M4 MacBook Pro and iPad Pro add further computing layers. The Pro Display XDR, here set against two glowing Nanoleaf panels, looks more spectacular than in any other setup in the archive — the XDR as a design element as much as a functional display.

6. This sick rig sports 9 Macs and 3 Apple displays

Photo: [email protected]
That this setup belongs to a consultant who “works for several companies” is the only way to explain the workstation’s density. It includes four high-spec Macs (Mac Studio, two 16-inch M1 Max MacBook Pros, one 14-inch M1 Max), five more everyday Macs and three Apple displays spanning three generations — a Pro Display XDR, a Studio Display and a classic Thunderbolt Cinema Display. AirPods Max and AirPods Pro complete the setup. The Pro Display XDR here is almost understated amid the sheer multiplicity of everything else — which, given that it costs $5,000, is a remarkable thing to be able to say.

5. Pro Display XDR setup includes loaded M3 MacBook Pro

Photo: [email protected]
This coder had a specific goal: to be able to code, watch YouTube and check logs simultaneously, each on its own screen. The solution involved a loaded 16-inch M3 Max MacBook Pro (approximately $4,000) plus three external displays, the finest of which is a Pro Display XDR added last. Joining the XDR are a 28-inch LG DualUp (nearly square) and a 34-inch Acer curved ultra-wide. A three-display configuration is itself unusual, especially with an XDR as the natural focal point. A rarely seen ZSA Voyager split keyboard handles ergonomic input duties. “My setup achieved its final form with the Pro Display XDR,” said the post’s title. The user flagged one lingering anxiety: that Apple might announce a successor and make them want to upgrade.

4. In our dreams: Studio Displays flank Pro Display XDR in M2 Ultra Mac Pro rig

Photo: [email protected]
The article’s headline is accurate: this is a setup to dream about. A high-end M2 Ultra Mac Pro — starting at $7,000, configurable past $12,000 — drives a 32-inch 6K Pro Display XDR flanked by two 27-inch 5K Studio Displays: Apple’s finest monitor bracketed by Apple’s second-finest, a total display investment of more than $8,000. A backup M1 Mac Studio sits nearby. PCIe NVMe storage cards fill the Mac Pro’s expansion slots, which was the clinching argument for choosing it over the Studio. Total hardware value on the desk: estimated north of $20,000. “Do you work at the money factory making commerce?” one user asked.

3. Drool-worthy gear: Former PC gamer goes all-in on Mac conversion

Photo: [email protected]
When this software engineering manager decided to leave PC gaming behind, he went big. A 16-inch M1 Max MacBook Pro drives not one but two Pro Display XDRs, mounted on Herman Miller Ollin monitor arms — “overkill and very premium, but those are the one thing I can wholeheartedly recommend if you have the budget,” he said. Both XDRs were partially expensed through his freelance business. A Sony Alpha A7 mirrorless camera on a mount above the displays serves as a webcam. Audio comes from a Sonos One speaker and Bang & Olufsen H95 headphones at $849. A custom Drop Alt mechanical keyboard with Holy Panda switches and Modern Dolce keycaps handles typing. You don’t see two Pro Display XDRs in one setup very often.

2. 3 Pro Display XDRs but only 1 highly recommended mount

Three Pro Display XDRs, a cheesegrater Mac Pro and a desktop PC occupy what this user titled, wisely, “I’d say ‘endgame,’ except it never really is, is it?” The center XDR runs in portrait orientation on a swivel mount — directly connected to the Mac Pro — while the flanking pair run in landscape. The article’s practical focus is the mount question: which stand holds a $5,000 display without wobble? The MonitorsInMotion arm is “solid as an absolute rock,” the user said. The AmazonBasics arm wobbles. The Ergotron wobbles only slightly. “Any social media poster flaunting more than one Pro Display XDR stands accused of possessing great wealth by commenters,” the article noted.

1. Mac Pro and 3-Pro-Display-XDR workstation is an AV wonderland

Photo: Liam Hudson
The most extreme Pro Display XDR setup in the archive belongs to Liam Hudson, CEO of a qualitative electronic trading company. Three 6K Pro Display XDRs — representing roughly $15,000 to $18,000 in displays alone — run via a CalDigit Thunderbolt 4 hub connected to a 2019 Mac Pro loaded with 96GB of RAM. Hudson uses the three screens “for maximum access to tabular data,” which is the kind of sentence that makes sense only if you trade for a living. The AV gear for videoconferencing is equally premium. A Glorious custom mechanical keyboard features custom XDR keycaps — a detail so specific it suggests someone who has fully committed to the XDR as a lifestyle identity. Three Pro Display XDRs, a fully loaded Mac Pro and XDR-branded keycaps: there is no setup in the archive where the monitor has been adopted more completely.
