The iOS 27 public beta is coming soon — if Apple’s previous release pattern holds up, it could hit your iPhone any day now. Developers have been having all the fun since early June, playing around with Siri AI and the new Liquid Glass slider while the rest of us waited. Now, that wait is almost over.

Once the public beta drops, which should be more stable than the initial developer betas, anyone can install iOS 27 for free. But your iPhone does need some prep first, and there are a few reasons you should think twice before hitting the Install button.

When is iOS 27 public beta coming?

Apple hasn’t revealed the exact date for the public beta, but promised at last month’s WWDC26 that it would arrive sometime in July.

Historically, every public beta from iOS 16 to iOS 26 has dropped between July 11 and July 24. This year’s release is expected to follow the same pattern, following the third or fourth developer beta.

That said, initial public betas have been coming later and later each July. The public first got their hands on the iOS 17 beta on July 12, 2024, then iOS 18 public beta 1 debuted July 15, 2025, and iOS 26 public beta 1 came on July 24 last year. So iOS 26 could still be several weeks away.

How to get your iPhone ready

Signing up for the public beta takes five minutes and doesn’t cost a single dime.

  1. Head to beta.apple.com and sign up for Apple’s Beta Software Program.
  2. On your iPhone, head over to Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates.
  3. Tap on iOS 27 Public Beta. If you don’t see the option, restart your iPhone once.
  4. Now, follow the prompts, and your iPhone will download the update and restart.

Is your iPhone compatible with iOS 27?

iOS 27 is coming for the iPhone 11 and newer models, so most people reading this should be covered.

But the catch is Apple Intelligence. Features built around Siri AI are limited to the iPhone 15 Pro and newer. But all compatible models will get the rest of the iOS 27 features, just not the AI headliners.

Also, even if your iPhone qualifies, you won’t automatically gain access to the new Siri AI. It’s currently gated behind a waitlist. You will need to sign up at Settings > Siri, and Apple says you may gain access after a few weeks.

Should you install the iOS 27 public beta?

Apple worked hard to make this year’s beta cycle a bit less painful than in previous years. Users who installed the iOS 27 developer beta report fewer reboot-inducing bugs than early iOS 26 adopters faced.

Still, less buggy doesn’t mean bug-free. If the iPhone is your primary device, or you use it for work, consider holding off until Apple ships the second or third public beta later this year.

For everyone else, the payoff is real. iOS 27 brings Siri AI, a refined Liquid Glass look with a transparency slider, noticeable performance gains, and much more.

The public beta is your preview of what’s coming — just don’t say we didn’t warn you about the bugs. iOS 27 will officially ship in September, alongside the iPhone 18 lineup.

Apple developing new Apple Pencil models for release next year, possibly with replaceable batteries

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says that Apple is developing a new lineup of Apple Pencil stylus accessories, set for launch next year alongside new iPad Pro models in spring 2027. This would mean new generations of Apple Pencil (USB-C) and the wireless-charging Apple Pencil Pro. Bloomberg suggests that these new stylus could feature new battery systems, which would make them more easily user-replaceable in order to comply with upcoming EU regulation.
