Apple's most advanced traditional iPhone meets its first foldable. Here's how the iPhone 18 Pro, as well as the iPhone 18 Pro Max, compare to the iPhone Duo.

The September Apple Event frequently involves the launch of multiple models of iPhone. Over the years, it's been common to see the premium Pro models brought out alongside the standard editions.

For 2026, this has been shaken up considerably. The standard models are nowhere to be seen, with the iPhone 18 Pro line launching alongside something completely new.

The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable, providing multiple displays, including a massive folding internal screen, and a considerable change in form factor. That, and an even higher price tag for the iPhone.

This is how the iPhone 18 Pro compares against the iPhone Duo, with the iPhone 18 Pro Max alongside for the size-conscious.

iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone Duo - Size, weight, and design

The most obvious difference is the form factor. The iPhone 18 Pro is a traditional slab, while the iPhone Duo folds in half.

This obviously means that there's a lot of differences between the two device families.

The iPhone 18 Pro measures 5.91 inches tall and 2.83 inches wide, at 8.75mm thick. It weighs 7.44 ounces, in an aluminum unibody frame, complete with a camera plateau on the back and a normal display on the front.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is more of the same, but larger at 6.43 inches tall and 3.07 inches wide. It weighs 8.78 ounces, the heaviest of the traditional Pro pair, but retains the same 8.75mm thickness.

The iPhone Duo is a different shape entirely. For a start, its ability to fold means it has two physical volumes to consider.

Folded, it is a compact 3.31 by 4.64 inches, but a chunky 11.3mm thick. Opened up, it's 6.48 inches wide and 4.64 inches tall, while the depth goes down to 5.2mm.

The extra engineering means there's also a weight increase beyond the Pro Max. The iPhone Duo comes in at 8.96 ounces.

That makes the iPhone Duo the heaviest of the three, as well as both the thickest and thinnest device, depending on if it's opened or closed.

On materials, the iPhone Duo steps up to grade 5 titanium, which it needs due to its very thin frame and a need for a hinge mechanism. The two Pro models use an aluminum unibody design instead of titanium.

The trade-off is clear. The iPhone Duo offers a far larger screen in the pocket, but at the cost of extra thickness and weight over even the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Whether you need it or not is another matter.

iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone Duo - Displays

Screen size is where the iPhone Duo justifies its shape. It opens up to a large inner display that measures 7.6 inches.

At a resolution of 1,878 by 2,670, it has a pixel density of 430 pixels per inch. When folded, its 5.4-inch outer screen runs at 1,398 by 2,034, for a sharper 460 pixels per inch.

That outer screen is smaller than either of the traditional Pro displays. It is designed for more typical iPhone-style usage, without needing to actually open the iPhone Duo up whenever you need to use it.

The iPhone 18 Pro has a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display. The resolution of 2,622 by 1,206 works out to be Apple's usual 460 pixels per inch.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max stretches to 6.9 inches at 2,868 by 1,320. That's the same pixel density as its non-Max stablemate, keeping the same sharpness.

All these displays share Apple's core technology. Each has ProMotion up to 120Hz, an always-on mode, a 2 million-to-one contrast ratio, and 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.

The inner display does benefit from having a multi-layer glass construction and titanium backing, so it can more easily withstand repeated opening and closing over time.

Since that internal screen is so large, there is also added support for the USB-C Apple Pencil. It makes sense, since it is so tablet-like in size, but be prepared to carry that Apple Pencil around with you.

There's no active stylus support on the iPhone 18 Pro, as usual, but you can always use a cheap capacitive stylus if you really want.

There's certainly a trade-off here, chiefly in screen quantity and screen size.

Bigger is usually better, but not if it sacrifices portability.

iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone Duo - Cameras

This is where the two Pro models pull ahead. The camera system is the iPhone 18 Pro's biggest advantage over the iPhone Duo.

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max share a triple 48MP rear system. It pairs a 48MP Main with variable aperture, a 48MP Ultra Wide, and a 48MP Telephoto reaching an 8x optical-quality zoom through a tetraprism design, and LiDAR.

The variable aperture is a first for iPhone. The Main camera adjusts between f/1.48 and f/4.0, giving control over depth of field and better low-light shots.

The iPhone Duo uses a dual 48MP system instead. A 48MP Fusion Main with a 2x optical-quality telephoto is paired with a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide, but there is no dedicated telephoto lens.

That leaves the iPhone Duo with a 4x optical-quality zoom range, against the Pro models' 16x. For anyone who shoots at distance, the Pro cameras reach far further.

The iPhone Duo does gain foldable-specific tricks. Smart Take captures photos automatically, so you can stand the iPhone Duo up, walk away and into frame, and the iPhone will detect when you strike a pose.

There's also Duo Preview, which shows subjects a live view of themselves on the outer screen so they can adjust themselves for the shot. Switch this for Apple's animations, and you have a way to encourage a child to look in the camera's direction.

You'd also get the benefit of using the rear camera for selfies, to really take advantage of the higher resolution.

On the front, the Pro models use an 18MP Center Stage camera. Its party trick is to switch between portrait and landscape orientations without you twisting the iPhone itself around, as well as automatic reframing of shots.

The iPhone Duo uses a 12MP Center Stage camera on the outer screen, which is useful if not as high a resolution. The internal screen uses an under-display FaceTime camera, which isn't visible when you're actively using the screen for other tasks.

While the imaging capabilities and things like 4K Dolby Vision video at 120fps are similar, the Pro models do also have some Pro-grade features.

For photographs, think Spatial Photos and ProRAW support. For video, that extends to 1080p Spatial Video at 30fps, ProRes video at 4K 120fps with external recording, ProRes RAW support, ACES, Apple Log 2, and Genlock support.

The Pro models have in recent years been considered actually usable for cinematic purposes, and so the iPhone 18 Pro is also going down that same road.

Apple has also introduced Apple Reference Image on the iPhone 18 Pro. Using signed sensor data and Private Cloud Compute, it can create an unalterable image that can be used to identify images altered or edited with AI.

The iPhone Duo doesn't have the chops for professional creative work, though you could probably expect to see it held by actors on a production at some point in the future.

iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone Duo - Processing and performance

All three phones share the same brain. Each uses Apple's A20 Pro chip, so raw performance is closely matched across the range. That said, you can still expect differences.

The A20 Pro has a 6-core CPU with two super cores and four efficiency cores. It pairs a 7-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine for on-device AI processing, meaning there are way more cores to play with for onboard AI processing.

Apple says that the chip is the same in both models. Apple says there's 50% more memory bandwidth than the A19 Pro, a 20% faster CPU, and a 40% faster GPU.

Sure, the underlying silicon is identical, but there could still be differences in performance due to other design elements.

The Pro models use a next-generation vapor chamber for cooling. With three times the surface area of the original to dissipate more heat, Apple says it can get up to 40% better sustained performance over the A19 Pro's version.

Helping things further is a change in layout for the A20. Using an M-class packaging design, the memory is no longer on top of the chip, further improving how it cools.

The iPhone Duo also has its own vapor chamber design, but within a thinner design with much tighter space limitations. This naturally affects how the thermals are managed, and it doesn't have the same level of sustained performance.

Rather than the 40% sustained performance improvement of the Pros, Apple says the A20 Pro in the iPhone Duo can manage 35%. This is certainly better than the iPhone 17 Pro's A19, but it's still narrowly less than the Pro models.

For most tasks, buyers will not notice a performance gap between the three. Sustained workloads will be the differentiator here, but that will be a very limited audience segment.

iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone Duo - Battery

Battery life favors the larger traditional models. The bigger bodies simply hold more cell capacity.

The iPhone 18 Pro reaches up to 36 hours of local video playback, 33 when streamed. The iPhone 18 Pro Max goes up to a massive 45 hours for local video playback, 40 hours streamed.

The iPhone Duo uses a dual-battery design, one cell on each side, though how long the battery lasts under the same metric depends on the display.

If you're using the larger inner display, it's 31 hours and 26 hours of local or streamed video playback. The smaller outer screen does a lot better at up to 44 hours for local video, 37 hours streamed.

That said, if you're watching video on the iPhone Duo, you're really going to use the larger display.

All three charge quickly. Each Pro reaches 50 percent in around 15 minutes with a 60W adapter and USB-C, with the Duo doing it in 20 minutes.

When it comes to wireless charging, there's MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging, and both can get to 50% charge in 30 minutes with a 35W charger and MagSafe.

While we're on the topic of MagSafe, be aware that accessory support for the iPhone Duo won't be the same as for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. According to Apple's website, the compatibility of MagSafe wallets excludes the iPhone Duo, presumably because of its size and design.

iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone Duo - Other features

Beyond their differences, the three phones have a lot in common. They share the same chip, storage tiers, and core connectivity.

All three offer 256GB to 2TB of storage, if you can afford the upgrades.

Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, and Thread. 5G with mmWave support is also included, as is NFC on the rear for transactions.

Wired connectivity is identical, with all using USB-C at 10Gbps.

Each carries an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.

All three are eSIM-only in the U.S., with no physical SIM tray. The Pro models will still support nano-SIMs in other markets, while the Duo won't ship with a nano-SIM option at all.

Crash Detection appears on both families, along with Emergency SOS via satellite, Messages via satellite, and Roadside Assistance via satellite.

When it comes to biometrics, there's a considerable difference at play. As usual, the Pro models use Face ID, while the iPhone Duo uses Touch ID built into the side button.

This makes sense, as it saves Apple from having to include multiple TrueDepth arrays to handle authentication duties when the iPhone Duo is open and closed.

iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone Duo - Price

Price is a major separator between these phones. As seen elsewhere in the smartphone market, being foldable commands a significant premium.

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 for 256GB, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,299. Both rise through 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB tiers from there, rising to respective maximums of $2,399 and $2,499.

The iPhone 18 Pro is available in Burgundy, Glacier, Silver, and Black.

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB. That is $800 more than the iPhone 18 Pro, and $700 more than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, for the same base storage.

At the maximum end of the scale, the iPhone Duo with 2TB of storage will cost an eye-watering $3,199.

The color selection is a little more limited for the iPhone Duo. You have the choice of Star White or Night Sky.

iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone Duo - Which to buy

When we usually provide a recommendation of which model to buy, it's usually a straightforward affair. Based on specifications, one would be objectively better than the other.

That's something that simply cannot be done this time, because the models are far too different. Form and function matter this time around.

With similar processing performance, it comes down more to whether the benefits of the iPhone Duo match the difference in price. That, and having to change the way you use an iPhone.

The iPhone Duo has a distinct advantage from the sheer size of the internal display. It's effectively a foldable iPad mini, but with a second screen on the back.

There are also certainly benefits to having dual screens, especially for social photography. That said, the Pro models still have a considerable edge in that you can actually zoom in without the cropped-sensor trick Apple employs.

The variable aperture in the Pro line is also a big thing for photographers, videographers, and creatives at large. Imaging is something that the iPhone Duo can't match, except in the actual act of taking the picture.

Ultimately, the choice is going to be about priorities. The iPhone Duo gives you a massive screen and the bragging rights of having a folding iPhone.

However, it's also at an $800 premium over the iPhone 18 Pro, or $700 more than the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are probably the pick for most buyers. You're getting the performance, strong battery life, the cameras, and a decent-sized display.

You're also saving more than enough to buy a MacBook Neo.

The iPhone Duo is very much an early-adopter device, for those who have the funds to match. The iPhone 18 Pro is for the rest of us.
